오늘의 시: 헨리 워즈워드 롱펠로우의 "The Builders"

좋은 시를 나누고 싶은데 한글 번역을 찾지 못하여 미약한 실력으로 번역해보았습니다. 양해 부탁드립니다. ^^

All are architects of Fate,

우리 모두는 운명의 건축가들입니다.

Working in these walls of Time;

시간이라는 벽들을 짓는

Some with massive deeds and great,

크고 위대한 업적을 가진 자들과

Some with ornaments of rhyme.

운율의 장식들을 가진 이들도 있습니다.

Nothing useless is, or low;

쓸모없는 것도, 낮은 것도 없으며

Each thing in its place is best;

그 자리에 있는 모든 것이 최선입니다.

And what seems but idle show

그리고 한가해 보이기만 하는 것은

Strengthens and supports the rest.

나머지를 강화하고 지지합니다.

For the structure that we raise,

우리가 짓는 이 건축물은

Time is with materials filled;

시간이라는 자재들로 채워져 있습니다.

Our to-days and yesterdays

우리의 오늘과 어제들은

Are the blocks with which we build.

우리가 쌓는 벽돌들입니다.

Truly shape and fashion these;

이것들을 진정으로 다듬고 빚어야 합니다.

Leave no yawning gaps between;

그 사이사이에 하품같은 간격들은 남겨두지 말고요.

Think not, because no man sees,

그 어떤 사람도 다 볼 수는 없지요.

Such things will remain unseen.

그런 것들은 눈에 보이지 않을 테니까요.

In the elder days of Art,

예술의 옛 시절에

Builders wrought with greatest care

건축가들은 매우 주의 깊게 일했습니다.

Each minute and unseen part;

일분마다 그리고 보이지 않는 부분까지

For the Gods see everywhere.

신들은 모든 곳을 보시니까요.

Let us do our work as well,

우리도 우리 일을 잘 해냅시다.

Both the unseen and the seen;

보이지 않는 것과 보이는 것 모두

Make the house, where Gods may dwell,

집을 짓는 거예요, 신들이 거처하는

Beautiful, entire, and clean.

아름답고, 온전하고, 깨끗한.

Else our lives are incomplete,

그렇지 않으면 우리의 삶은 불완전합니다.

Standing in these walls of Time,

시간이라는 벽에 서서

Broken stairways, where the feet

올라가고자 하지만

Stumble as they seek to climb.

부서진 계단 위에서 비틀거릴 뿐이지요.

Build to-day, then, strong and sure,

그러니 오늘을 튼튼하고 확실하게 지어야지요.

With a firm and ample base;

단단하고 충분한 토대를 가지고 말입니다.

And ascending and secure

그러면 내일은 안전하게 상승하며

Shall to-morrow find its place.

자신의 자리를 찾을 수 있을 테니까요.

Thus alone can we attain

그렇게 우리는 홀로 도달할 수 있지요.

To those turrets, where the eye

세상을 하나의 넓은 평원으로

Sees the world as one vast plain,

그리고 끝없이 펼쳐진 하늘을

And one boundless reach of sky.

볼 수 있는 그 탑들에.
