James Ruse was a pioneer farmer in Australia. He was the first convict in Australia to be given land for farming and to be self - sufficient by producing his food from a small piece of land.
James Ruse was born on a farm in England in 1759. When he was 23 years old, he was arrested for stealing two silver watches. For punishment, he was sent as a convict to work for seven years in colony in Sydney, New SouthWales. He travelled on one of the ships of the First Fleet that arrived in Australia in January, 1788.
Soon after the people of he First Fleet arrived in Sydney there were problems. Governor Phillip knew the food they'd brought with them from England would soon be gone. He knew they must grow their own food or they would starve. But the land around Sydney was hard and not good for growing vegetables. The seasonswere different to Europe. The weather was very hot and many things were new and unfamiliar. Some of the convicts were sick and weak. Many of them were lazy and not interested in trying to grow anything.
James Rose was different ; he wanted to give it a go. He told Governor Phillip that he had experience as a farmer. He asked if he could have some land to grow food and show that he could become self - sufficient in a short time. Governor Phillip allowed James to live and work on a small area of land near the Parramstta River, twenty kilometres west of Sydney. Governor Phillip allowed this because he saw that James Ruse was a well-behaved convict. It was an experiment to see if it was possible to succeed in farming in a country where the seasons and soil were unfamiliar. James Rule's farm was called 'Experiment Farm'.
