James and his wife, Elizabeth, were given clothes, tools, two cows, six chickens and some vegetable seeds, as well as help to clear and dig the land. They worked hard and after only fifteen months they could say they were successful. They showed that it was possible for afamily to survive through farming in the colony of New South Wales. Governor Phillip was very pleased because the success of James and his wife made other convicts want to try the same methods. Within a few monhts, a farming community began near the Parramatta River.
As a reward for his hard work, Governor Phillip allowed James to keep his farm. This meant that although James was still a convict, he would become the owner of his own piece of land. This happened in 1791 and was the first land grant to a convict in Australia.
James and Elizabeth had three children, and later sold their first farm and moved on to build a bigger and more successful one. Later they had problems such as droughts and floods, however, they showed that successful farming was possible in Australia and they never returned to England. They showed that hard work and being ready to try new methods in an unfamiliar place could bring success, even when other people didn't believe it was possible.
