Together, You Can Redeem the Soul
미국의 Civil Rights Movement의 리더이자 정치인 John Lewis 의원이 타계했다. 그리고 New York Times는 그가 생전 마지막으로 쓴 에세이를 세상에 공개함으로써 '남은 자'들이 앞으로 무엇을 해야 하는지 알려주었다. 나 역시 '남은 자' 로서 그를 추모하고, 그가 마지막으로 남긴 메시지를 내 마음에 잘 새겨보려 한다.
Rest in Power, Mr. Lewis.
He said we are all complicit when we tolerate injustice. He said it is not enough to say it will get better by and by. He said each of us has a moral obligation to stand up, speak up and speak out. When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something.

-불합리한 것을 묵인하면 우리도 다 '공범'이다.
-불합리한 것을 마주하면 가만히 있지 말고 말하자. 행동하자.
-더 나아질 거다,라고 생각하며 가만히 있지 말자. 우리 모두에게는 일어서서 말할 도덕적인 의무가 있다. 무언가가 잘못된 것을 봤다면, 말해야 한다. 행동해야 한다.
생각해볼 부분:
누가 봐도 불합리한 것, 잘못된 것을 그냥 보고 지나친 적이 있었는지 생각해보자.
Ordinary people with extraordinary vision can redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. Voting and participating in the democratic process are key. The vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society. You must use it because it is not guaranteed. You can lose it.
-놀라운 비전을 가진 지극히 평범한 사람들이 "필요한 불편함"을 감수함으로써 미국의 영혼을 살릴 수 있다. 투표와 민주적인 프로세스에 참여하는 것이 가장 중요하다.
-투표권을 갖고 있다는 것 = 폭력을 쓰지 않고 사회를 바꿀 수 있는 가장 힘 있는 방법
-투표권을 갖고 있을 때 쓰자. 언젠가는 잃을 수도 있는 것이니 있을 때 쓰자.
생각해볼 부분:
역사를 보면 투표권을 얻기 위해 많은 사람들이 희생되었는데, 나는 그 투표권에 대해 너무 당연하게 생각하고 있지는 않았나 생각해본다. 투표를 할 수 있음에도 불구하고 쉬는 날 투표하러 가는 길에 너무 투덜거리지는 않았는지. 사람이 많다고, 줄 서는 게 싫어서 가기 싫어했던 나 자신을 돌이켜보며, 반성한다.
*내가 갖고 있는 것 중에 저절로 얻어진 것은 없다. 감사하며 살자.
Though I may not be here with you, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. In my life I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. Now it is your turn to let freedom ring.

생각해볼 부분:
나는 내 삶의 마지막에서 "내가 할 수 있는 모든 것을 다 했다"라고 말할 수 있을까. 그렇게 말할 수 있는 사람이 얼마나 될까. 끝자락에서 당당하게 내 할 일은 내가 다 하고 간다,라고 말할 수 있는 사람이 될 수 있도록 내 일에서 최선을 다하자.
When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st century, let them say that it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression and war. 생각해 볼 부분:
내 삶에 사랑과 평화가 살아 숨 쉬고 있는지 확인해 볼 것. 화내기 전에 한번 더 생각하자. 짜증내기 전에 한번 더 생각하자. 내 삶에 사랑과 평화가 가득할 수 있게 늘 이 말을 마음속에 새기자.
