절충적인; 다방면에 걸친

요즘 들어 '다양한'이라는 말을 좀 더 화려하게 표현하고자 '다채로운'으로 대체하는 경우를 심심찮게 본다. 나 역시 번역을 하면서 애용하다가도 너무 자주 쓴다 싶으면 지겨워져서 이런저런 다른 표현을 찾고자 노력은 하는데, 늘 한국어 원어민이면서도 방송인이자 영어권 원어민 타일러보다 더 부족한 우리말 실력에 조용히 찌그러져 흐느끼곤 한다.

나는 특히 네이버 국어사전 창을 늘 열어놓고 일한다. 오히려 네이버 영어사전은 볼 일이 거의 없다. 내가 무심코 쓰는 단어의 의미를 돌이켜보는 작업을 하다 보면 번역이 풀릴 때가 더 많기 때문이다. 네이버 국어사전이 정의한 '다채로운'의 뜻은 다음과 같다.

이에 딱 대응하는 단어가 'colorful'이다. 그런데 'diverse'를 비롯해 'a wide range of~'나 'a variety of~' 등등도 다채롭다고 번역하면 무난하다. 'eclectic'이라는 단어가 있는데 '절충적인'이라는 본 뜻이 있지만 'diverse'와 뜻이 비슷하고 다채로움에 스타일리시한 고급스러움이 추가된 느낌이 든다.

'eclectic'의 유의어가 'diverse'이긴 하나 'diverse'는 '다양한'에 더 가까운 느낌이고, 'eclectic'이 좀 더 다'채'로운 느낌을 주지 않나 싶다.
