USC에서 재정보조/장학금 받고 싶어요

국제학생, 성적 우수 장학금은 받을 수 있다
USC를 우리는 흔히 '남가주 대학'이라고 한다. 서던 캘리포니아 유니버시티를 그렇게 번역을 한 것이다.
한 때 우리는 승용차 뒤에 USC 마크를 자랑스럽게 붙이고 다니는 사람을 많이 보았다. 한국인들 가운데 USC를 졸업한 명사들이 많다. 지금도 많은 학생들이 이 대학에 진학을 한다. 한국인들에게는 인기 있는 대학이다
그만큼 좋은 대학이다. 구글에 검색을 하면 많은 국내 명사들의 이름이 뜬다.
문제는 학비다. 이 대학의 등록금은 $58,195이고 기숙사비는 $15,912다. 여기에 용돈과 책값까지 더하면 연간 9000만원이 훌쩍 넘는다. 그래서 가난한 아빠의 자녀는 이 대학에 가기 어렵다.
누구는 이렇게 말할 것이다. "미래교육연구소가 미국 대학 장학금을 받고 가면 국내 대학 학비보다 저렴하게 갈 수 있다고 했느니 USC에서 장학금을 받아서 가면 되겠네요?"라고. 그렇다면 이 대학은 국제학생들에게 장학금을 줄까?
그래서 이 대학교 홈페이지에 들어가서 국제학생들에게 장학금을 주나 살펴 보았다. 그 내용을 아래 카피를 해서 올려 놓았다. 이 대학은 130개 국가에서 온 국제학생들이 전체 USC 학생 커뮤니티의 17%를 구성하고 있다. 그러나 국제학생들에게는 need based grant를 안준다.
미국 시민권자와 난민, 영주권자등에게만 준다고 명시를 하고 있다. 성적 우수 장학금은 준다고 말한다. 그것도 제한적으로. 재정보조에 관한한 아주 인색한 대학이다. 세계 각국의 학생 가운데 부자만 오라는 것이다. 가난한 아빠의 자녀는 받지 않겠다는 것이다. 그래서 필자는 이 대학을 싫어한다. 자세한 것은 여기에 올리지 못하지만 싫어할 요소들이 또 있다.
International Students
With its global outlook and location in a proudly multicultural city, USC offers a warm welcome to international students. Citizens of more than 130 countries comprise 17 percent of the university's student body.
Only U.S. citizens, eligible non-citizens (such as permanent residents, refugees, or asylees, and undocumented students (meeting certain criteria) are eligible for certain types of financial aid. However, other sources of aid may be available to international students who are not U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens:
Some departments provide their scholarships in the form of a monthly stipend that is paid directly to the student receiving the award. Stipend payments are made monthly according to the stipend schedule.
On-campus work (not including Federal Work-Study).
Off-campus work, with permission from the Office of International Services.
Please note that off-campus work authorization is very limited.
Private financing. In most cases, students will need to apply for financing with a co-borrower who is a credit-worthy U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident. (Contact lenders directly for citizenship requirements.)
If you do receive financial aid funds while at USC, you will need to complete the W-8BEN Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Form.
