춘색만원(春色滿園) 재해석
석촌호수 벚꽃놀이
신윤복, <춘색만원>, 조선 후기열 번째로 소개드릴 작품은 <춘색만원>입니다.
신윤복의《혜원전신첩》에는 하나의 큰 분류로 나눌 수 있을 만큼 연인들이 등장하는 그림이 많은데요, 그중 <춘색만원>은 이를 대표하는 작품입니다. 새싹이 움트는 봄날 낮에 술을 한잔 걸친 것인지 얼굴이 벌게진 무관의 벼슬아치가 나물 캐러 나온 여염집 여인의 바구니를 잡아끌며 눈빛을 보내고 있습니다. 왼쪽 위 화제에는 “春色滿園中, 花開爛漫紅.“(봄빛 전원에 가득하니 붉은 꽃은 흐드러지게 피었구나.)라고 되어있는데 아이러니하게도 그림 안에는 어디에도 붉은 꽃은 찾아볼 수가 없습니다. 아마도 봄날의 춘정 혹은 남성의 빨간 얼굴을 빗대어 표현한 것 같습니다. 이 작품에는 특히 여러 가지 남녀 관련 비유적 요소들을 찾아보는 재미가 있는데요, 오른쪽 배경의 초가지붕을 뚫고 나온 암석이나 여인의 바구니가 그것입니다. 푸른 소매 끝을 보니 결혼한 여성이네요. 무엇을 상징하는 것인지는 상상에 맡기겠습니다. :)
The tenth piece I'd like to introduce is "Chunsaekmanwon". Within Shin Yun-bok's "Hyewonjeonsincheop", there are numerous paintings featuring lovers, and among them, "Chunsaekmanwon" stands out as a representative work. On a spring day when sprouts are emerging, a nobleman with a flushed face, possibly from a drink in the daytime, is pulling the basket of wild vegetables carried by a married woman who has come out to gather them. They exchange meaningful glances.
In the top left of the painting, there is a phrase written: "春色滿園中, 花開爛漫紅." Translated, it says, "In the midst of spring colors filling the garden, flowers bloom vividly in red." Ironically, you won't find any red flowers in the picture. Perhaps this is an expression of the spring season or a man's flushed face. This work is particularly enjoyable as it contains various metaphorical elements related to sexuality. For example, the rock protruding through the thatched roof in the background on the right or the woman's basket can be examined for symbolic meaning. I'll leave it to your imagination to decipher what these elements might symbolize. :)
<춘색만원>재해석, 2023, Silkscreen, 28.3x35.3cm재해석 작품은 벚꽃이 흐드러진 석촌호수를 배경으로 하였습니다. 따뜻한 날 봄놀이를 나온 두 연인이 벚꽃 아래서 눈빛교환을 하고 있네요. 남성은 원작의 합죽선 대신 차 키를 들고 있고 다른 한 손은 여성의 열린 핸드백을 끌어당기는 듯 보입니다. 여성에게 어디론가 가자고 신호를 보내는 것 같네요... 뒤편에는 대한민국에서 가장 높은 123층 555m를 자랑하는 롯데월드타워가 우뚝 솟아 있습니다. 원작에서는 은유적으로 표현된 흐드러지게 핀 '붉은 꽃'을 재해석 작품에서는 직접적으로 표현해 보았습니다.
The reinterpretation piece is set against the backdrop of Seokchon Lake adorned with fully bloomed cherry blossoms. On a warm day, two lovers emerge for a spring outing beneath the cherry blossoms, exchanging glances. The male figure, holding a car key instead of the original folding fan, appears to pull at the open handbag carried by the woman with his other hand. It seems he's signaling to the woman to go somewhere together. In the background, South Korea's tallest structure, Lotte World Tower, boasting an impressive 123 floors and 555 meters, stands tall.
Where the original metaphorically expressed the 'red flower', the reinterpretation directly portrays this imagery with actual flowers. Amidst the blooming cherry blossoms, the two lovers communicate their feelings and enjoy the beauty of spring. This artwork captures moments of warmth, love, and the harmonious coexistence of nature and urban structures.

The weather has been fluctuating, and it's gradually getting colder. Although it still feels like spring is quite far away, I hope to feel the warm embrace between lovers depicted in the artwork "Chunsaekmanwon", anticipating a warm spring in 2024.
