옳은 말을 들을 줄 아는 귀

The Crown을 보며 드는 생각들

세계대전 후 그리고 수에즈 운하 사건 이후에 변화하는 영국 정세 가운데 왕권은 변하지 않고 전통을 고수하는 것을 보며 한 이름 없는 변방의 실패한 정치가, 작은 출판사를 운영하는 Lord Altrincham이 엘리자베스 2세를 혹평한다. 하지만 악의에서 나온 말이 아니라 어쩌면 영국을 사랑하는 마음에 진심을 다한 그 말, 또 타이밍에 맞게 영국 국민들이 그 말에 동조함에 따라 영국 여왕이 그를 몰래 불러 담화를 나눈다.​

물론 교회가 궁궐은 아니지만 너무 전통에 매여 있는 한국교회와 비슷한 나머지 이 장면을 보면서 한국교회를 생각하지 아니할 수 없다.

그가 왕비에게 충언한 내용, 3가지 멈추어야 할 것과 3가지 시작해야 할 것들에 대한 내용을 한번 살펴보자

Three things to start and three things to stop.

Stop

1) Putting an end to the dubutantes' ball. The idea that young women of a certain class are presented to the sovereign, and women who are not of that class are not presented to the sovereign and somehow not acceptable. This is the sort of inequity that should have died out with our granparents' generation, certainly after the war.

2) Allow divorced people to move more freely in royal circles.

(왕비의 반박: Why? The sovereign is head of the Church of England, and the Church does not recognize divoced persons.)

It's unkind. Discriminatory. Quite possibly unlawful.

3) I would recommend getting rid of an entire generation of courtier. The old school, stuck in the past. Ostriches with their heads buried in the sand. They're stopping the palace evolve in keeping with the rest of the world.

(왕비의 반박: Those "ostriches" provide an indispensable function of monarchy: the preservation of tradition.)

You asked for my recommendations, ma'am. I'm respectfully passing them on.

Start

1) Open up ma'am. Lower the drawbridge. Let people get to know you.

(왕비의 반박: I don't wish to be known.)

2) Televise the christmas speech. Become more transparent, accessible.

3) Spend time with normal people. Not just courtiers or the great and the good, but real people, average people, working people. Open the doors. Make it more inclusive and egalitarian. Let normal people get to know you, too.

궁궐 안에만 갇혀 있는 왕비, 교회 안에만 갇혀 있는 목사, 충언을 하는 정치가의 말을 듣는 왕비, 아무리 충언을 해도 듣지 않는 목사. 물론 말을 듣는 목사도 있지만 말을 듣지 않는 목사도 있기에... 물론 픽션이 들어 있다 하지만 정말 너무 부럽다. 이런 역사가... 최소한 그녀는 자신의 상황을 객관적으로 인식하고 자신을 대적하는 그를 따로불러 그 말이 어떤 말인지 한번 들어보고자 하는 마음이 있었음에…

그리고 결국 왕비는 몇 가지를 받아들이는데 대부분 그가 건의했던 사항들이 다 이루어진다. 물론, 자신의 생존을 위해서 어쩔 수 없이 받아들이는 양상이지만...

그 생존의 문제조차도 스스로 자각하지 못하는 지도자들을 보면 가슴이 아프다. 들으려 하지 않는 지도자들, 주위에 듣고 자 하는 이야기들만 해주는 아첨꾼들이 있는 지도자들, 자기와 자기 조직의 상태를 객관적으로 볼 수 없는 지도자들 밑에 있는 교회나 조직이나 나라의 구성원들은 참으로 불행하다.
