기억나나요? 이 늠름한 모습들!!!

기억이 가물하긴 한데, 창병을 업그레이드하면 팔랑스(phalanx)가 되었습니다. 무적이나 강하고, 맷집도 세지만, 이동속도가 느리다는 단점이 기억납니다. 예들은 혼자 다니면 안 되고, 네모나게 밀집대형으로 뭉처다니게 했는데, 그 모아진 군대를 고대 그리스어로 팔랑스라고 합니다. 

그런데, 손가락뼈와 발가락뼈를 모두 의학용어로 팔랑스(phalanx)라고 합니다. 뼈들이 일렬로 5명, 아니 다섯 개씩 선모습이 군대와 같아서 붙인 이름입니다. 아래 그림에 주황색 부분인데, 장갑을 두른 병사들이 일열로 선것처럼 보이지요?? 믿으세요. 엄지를 제외한 각각 손가락들은 3개의 뼈로 구성되어 있습니다. 엄지만, 2개의 뼈, 한 개의 관절입니다. 그래서, 총 14개의 뼈가 phalanx를 구성합니다. 각각 몸통에서 가까운 순서로 proximal, middle, distal phalanx라고 합니다. 

팔랑스(Phalanx)의 복수형은  팔랑지스(phalanges)입니다. x가 g로 바뀌죠. 그런데, 팔랑시스(phalanxes)도 틀리지 않은 복수형이라고 합니다.  군대 단위를 표현할 때는 팔랑시스(phalanxes)로, 해부학용어로써 손가락을 표현할 때는 주로 팔랑지스(phalanges)라고 한다고 합니다. 그러니, 뭐 어느 쪽이 틀리다고는 할 수 없겠지요.(주).
