고통은 어디에나 존재한다.

요즘 같은 상황에서 자주 생각나는 시이다.

고통은 어디에서나 발생한다는 것, 그러한 고통에 대해서 의도적이거나 혹은 그렇지 않거나 종종 '외면' 하고 있다는 것을 상기시킨다. 나의 행복이 누군가에게는 불행이 될 수도 있는 사회에서 산다는 것은 참으로 서글픈 일이다. 그렇기에 오든과 같은 옛 거장들의 말에 귀를 기울여 주의하며 살아야 하지 않을까 싶다.

끔찍한 순교도 반드시 그곳을 지나쳐야 한다는 것을

예로, Brueghel의 Icarus를 보자. 얼마나 모든 이들이 외면하는지

재앙에서 얼마나 느긋한지; 농부는

Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,

물속으로 떨어지는 고독한 비명의 소리를 들었을지도 모른다.

그러나 그에게 있어서 그것은 중요한 참사가 아니었다. 태양은 여전히 빛났다.

As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green

초록색 물속으로 하얀 다리가 사라지고 있었을 때도
