틱톡 CEO 케빈 메이어, 석 달 만에 사임
CNBC는 틱톡(TikTok) CEO 케빈 메이어가 석 달 만에 회사를 그만뒀다고 밝혔다.
케빈 메이어는 직원들에게 보낸 메일을 통해 “최근 몇 주 동안 정치 환경이 급변하면서 기업의 구조 변화가 무엇을 필요로 할지, 그리고 제가 맡은 글로벌 역할에 어떤 의미가 있는지에 대해 깊게 생각을 해왔다”라며, “이런 상황에서, 곧 해결이 될 것으로 예상되므로, 내가 회사를 떠나기로 결정했다는 사실을 무거운 마음으로 여러분께 알리고자 한다”라고 말했다.
메이어는 지난 6월 1일, 디즈니에서 틱톡에 합류했다.
숏폼 동영상 공유 앱인 틱톡은 은 현재 자사의 앱이 국가 안보 위협으로 만들고 있다는 트럼프의 행정명령에 따라 사업을 팔 수밖에 없는 상황이다. 틱톡은 이러한 주장에 일관되게 부인해 왔으며, 자사의 미국 사용자 데이터는 미국에 저장되어 있다고 말해왔다.
최근, 마이크로소프트(Microsoft)와 오라클(Oracle)은 베이징에 본사를 둔 틱톡의 모회사인 바이트댄스로 부터 틱톡을 인수하기 위해 경쟁 중에 있다.
도널드 트럼프 대통령은 8월 6일, 9월 15일 이전에 인수 협상을 마쳐야 한다는 행정명령에 서명했다. 이에 지난 월요일, 틱톡은 미국 정부로부터 정당한 인수 절차를 박탈당했다며 소송을 제기했다.
틱톡 대변인은 CNBC와의 인터뷰를 통해 “지난 몇 달간의 정치적 상황이 케빈의 역할 범위를 크게 변화시켰다는 것을 충분히 이해하며, 그의 결정을 전적으로 존중한다”라며, “틱톡에서 함께 한 시간에 감사하며 앞으로 그가 건승하길 빈다”라고 말했다.
TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer has quit the company just months after his appointment.
“In recent weeks, as the political environment has sharply changed, I have done significant reflection on what the corporate structural changes will require, and what it means for the global role I signed up for. Against this backdrop, and as we expect to reach a resolution very soon, it is with a heavy heart that I wanted to let you all know that I have decided to leave the company,” Mayer said in a letter to employees obtained by CNBC.
Mayer joined TikTok on June 1 from Disney.
The short-video-sharing app is being forced to sell its U.S. business by the Trump administration, which says the app’s current ties to China make it a national security threat. TikTok has consistently denied those allegations and says its U.S. user data is stored in the country itself with a backup in Singapore.
Microsoft and Oracle are competing to acquire the business from TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance.
An executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Aug. 6 means that a sale must go through before Sept. 15 or the app could be banned in the U.S. On Monday, TikTok sued the U.S. government alleging it was deprived of due process.
“We appreciate that the political dynamics of the last few months have significantly changed what the scope of Kevin’s role would be going forward, and fully respect his decision. We thank him for his time at the company and wish him well,” a TikTok spokesperson told CNBC.
