AI 시대, 왜 영어를 읽을 수 있어야 하지?

AI 번역이 잘 되어 있는데 왜 영어를 공부하고 읽어야 해?

대부분 이런 질문을 할 때 그 밑바탕에는 "힘든 것은 어떻게든 피하고 싶어"라는 마음이 깔려 있다.^^;

오랜 시간 영어를 읽고 번역하고 감수를 해온 사람으로 나의 생각을 적어본다.  

기계가 영어를 번역한 것을 읽는 것, 나쁘지 않다. 아니, 효율성에 있어서는 옳다. 바쁜 시간 어서 읽고 뭔가를 만들어내야 할 때 번역기(요즘은 AI 번역이 대세)를 활용하는 것은 당연하다. 단, 문장을 읽을 수 있는 힘은 내가 갖고 있어야 한다. 왜냐하면 정보의 주도권을 갖기 위함이다. 정보의 주도권을 갖는다는 것은 내가 정보의 주인으로서 활용할 수 있는 권한을 갖고 있다는 것이다. 이는 다른 말로 틀린 것, 부적절한 것은 과감히 버리고 적절한 정보를 취해서 활용한다는 의미이기도 하다. 그것이 가능하려면 정보를 '판단'할 수 있어야 한다.

AI 시대에 꼭 필요한 능력으로 옳고 그름을 판별할 수 있는 힘을 꼽는다. AI는 절대 자기가 모른다고 하지 않는다. 끝까지 그럴듯하게 답을 만들어 낸다. 생성형 AI가 만들어낸 답변 중에 잘못된 것이 있다는 것(Hallucination, 할루시네이션)은  어쩔 수 없는 AI의 한계다. AI는 본인이 학습한 자료에서 패턴을 인식해서 답을 내놓을 뿐 그것이 옳고 그른지 스스로 판별할 수 없다. (그것까지 다 된다면?! 상상만으로도 끔찍하군.)

다시 처음 질문으로 돌아가서 '왜 영어를 읽을 수 있어야 하지?'

AI가 번역한 것을 쭉 읽어보는데  '어...? 이거 좀 이상한데. 내가 알고 있는 지식, 경험, 이론과 맞지 않아' 그럴 땐 근거가 되는 문서를 찾아보고 읽어봐야 한다. 두 가지를 의심해봐야 한다. 번역의 정확성과 (번역이 틀리지 않았다면) 정보 자체의 정확성이다. 필요하다면 그 정보가 참조한 근거 자료에 대한 팩트 체크도 해야 한다. 팩트 체크를 위해서 다른 검색형 AI(퍼플렉시티 같은)를 활용할 수도 있다.   

두 경우 모두 영어를 읽고 이해하는 힘이 필요하다.

왜 꼭 영어인가?

세상 대부분의 정보가 어떤 언어로 되어있을까? 아직 영어다. 영어를 적어도 읽고 이해할 수 있어야(쓰고 말할 수 있으면 더 좋지만) 번역한 정보가 맞거나 틀렸는지 알 수 있다. 영어를 읽을 수 있으면 내 앞에 펼쳐진 정보를 판별할 수 있다. 더 나아가 정보의 퀄리티도 평가할 수 있다. 정보의 홍수 속에서 좋은 정보를 감별할 수 있다면 지식인에게는 더없이 유리하다.  

결론은 AI 시대에도 우리는 영어를 읽을 수 있어야 한다. 단어의 다양한 의미와 뉘앙스를 알고 있어야 문맥에 맞게 이해할 수 있고 또 질문할 수 있다. AI가 있으니 난 이제 영어 공부 안 해도 되겠지~는 참 소박한 바람일 뿐. 물론 이전과는 공부의 방향과 목적은 조금씩 달라지고 있다. 시험 통과를 위한 공부가 아닌 나의 지식을 더욱 풍성하게 해줄 공부, AI와 세상과의 협업을 더욱 효율적으로 만들어줄 공부로 진화하고 있다.

  

그러니 영어공부 즐겁게 하자. ^^ 무엇이든 하는 과정이 즐거워야 지속할 수 있으니.

요즘 가능한 하루 한 번은 GPT에게 영어로 묻고 (번역 없이) 답변을 바로 읽는 연습을 하려 한다. 오늘 나의 질문은 리터러시가 무엇인가?이다. 답변을 읽고 영어로 한 두 번  더 질문해 본다.

이 방법이 좋은 점은

내가 관심 있는 부분이라 더 잘 이해가 되고 그 답변을 활용해서 내 지식 콘텐츠로 만들 수 있다! 는 것이다. 하루에 한 번 영어로 GPT에게 질문하기!

영어 독해 뿐 아니라 간단한 영작에 도움이 된다(영작 첨삭은 또 GPT로 할 수 있으니 일석이조!)

단지 리터러시가 뭐야? 물었는데 더 공부할 것을 듬뿍 던져준다. 읽어보고 이해가 안 되는 것은 또 질문해 본다.

내가 해석한 것은 또 AI 번역과 비교해 보면서 확인할 수 있다. 지식과 영어 둘 다를 잡을 수 있는 공부법이다.

오늘 알게 된 책 이름이 문득 생각난다. 아... 이제 정말 AI와 나 Dual Brain이구나.
