<이젠 받아들일 때가 됐다, 그는 진지하다>

트럼프의 다보스 연설을 처음부터 끝까지 쭉 들어봤다. 듣고 난 뒤에 가슴에 날아와 박힌 표현들을 정리했다. 본래의 취지가 곡해되지 않도록 원문을 함께 붙였다.

The United States is in the midst of the fastest and most dramatic economic turnaround in our country’s history. Under the Biden administration, America was plagues by the nightmare of stagflation, a recipe for misery, failure and decline, But now, after just 1 year of my policies, we are witnessing the exact opposite.

미국은 건국 이래 유래가 없는 빠르고 드라마틱한 경제회생을 체험하고 있다. 바이든 행정부 기간에 미국은 스태그플레이션으로 인한 고통과 실패, 쇠락 앞에 시름했다. 하지만 나의 정책들로 인해 미국은 1년만에 정확히 정반대 방향 (옳은 방향)으로 나아가고 있다.

In 4 years, we’ve secured commitments for a record breaking $18 trillion. That’s never been done by any country at any time, not even close.

다가올 4년 동안 (즉, 트럼프의 재임기간 동안) 18조 달러의 투자를 유치했다. 이는 유사 이래 그 어떤 나라도 해내지 못한 일이다.

The USA is the economic engine on the planet. And when America booms, the entire world booms. That’s been the history. You all follow us down and you follow us up.

미국은 지구경제의 엔진이다. 미국이 좋아지면 세계도 같이 좋아지고, 미국이 어려워지면 세계도 함께 힘들어진다.

I never thought we could do it this quickly. I thought I would take more than a year, maybe like a year and one month. But it’s happened very quickly.

나도 내가 이렇게 빨리 문제를 해결할 수 있을지 몰랐다. 13개월쯤 걸릴 줄 알았는데… (연설 당일은 트럼프 2기가 시작된 지 366일째 날이었다).

In recent decades, it became conventional wisdom in Washington and European capitals that the only way to grow a modern Western economy was through ever increasing government spending, unchecked mass migration and endless foreign imports.

지난 몇 세기 동안, 미국과 유럽의 지도자들은 정부 지출을 늘리고 이민과 수입이 폭증하는 건 당연시해왔다.

Instead of empowering bureaucrats, we are firing them and they are going out and getting jobs in the private sector for 2 ~ 3 tines what they were making in government. They started off hating me when we fired them, and now they love me.

관료주의를 방관하는 대신 우리는 그들을 (불필요한 공무원들) 해고해 버렸다. 지금 이들은 민간 직장에서 정부에서 벌었던 것보다 2~3배나 되는 돈을 벌고 있다. 잘릴 때엔 날 싫어했지만 지금은 다들 날 좋아한다.

It’s a beautiful thing to say and the leadership of the country has been very good. They’ve been very, very smart.

(베네수엘라 지도자들이 미국에 순응하는 태도를 놓고) 그들은 매우 똑똑하게 잘 처신하고 있다.

Because of my landslide election victory, the US avoided catastrophic energy collapse which befell every European nation that pursued the Green New Scam.

내가 당선된 덕분에 미국은 유럽을 에너지 재앙에 빠뜨린 친환경 사기극의 덫을 벗어날 수 있었다.

There are windmills all over Europe. There are windmills all over the place and they are losers.

유럽은 어디를 가나 풍차로 가득하다. 그들은 루저다.

China makes almost all of the windmills, and yet I haven’t been able to find any wind farms in China. They are smart, China is very smart.

중국은 전세계 풍차의 대부분을 만들지만 정작 자기들은 풍력을 쓰지 않는다. 그들은 진짜 영리하다. (풍력이 나라를 망친다는 걸 알고 의도적으로 풍력 인프라를 경쟁국들에게 저가로 수출하고 있다는 뜻이다)

We want strong allies, not seriously weakened ones. We want Europe to be strong.

우리는 든든한 우방을 원하지 약해 빠진 짐덩어리를 원하지 않는다. 우린 유럽이 강해지길 바란다.

I have tremendous respect for both the people of Greenland and the people of Denmark. But every NATO ally has an obligation to be able to defend their own territory. And the fact is, no nation of group of nations is able to secure Greenland other than the US.

난 그린란드인들과 덴마크인들을 존경한다. 하지만 NATO 국가라면 자기들의 땅을 스스로 지킬 능력을 갖출 의무가 있다. 하지만 NATO의 멤버 가운데 그린란드를 지킬 수 있는 건 오직 미국뿐이다.

We are a great power much greater than people even understand. I think they found that our 2 weeks ago in Venezuela.

미국의 힘은 당신들이 알고 상상하는 수준 그 이상이다. 2주 전 우리가 베네수엘라에서 한 일을 돌이켜보라.

Without us, right now you would all be speaking German and a little Japanese perhaps.

미국이 아니었다면 당신들은 지금 독일어, 그리고 어쩌면 약간의 일본어로 말하고 있었을 것이다.

Everybody talks about the minerals…that’s not the reason we need it. We need it for strategic national security and international security.

(미국이 그린란드를 가지려는 이유가 희토류라고 생각하는 사람들이 많은데) 우린 미국, 나아가 세계의 안정 때문에 그린란드가 필요하다.

In 2019, Denmark said that they would spend over $200 million to strengthen Greenland’s defense but you know, they spent less than 1% of that amount.

2019년, 덴마크는 그린란드의 방위를 위해 2억 달러를 쓰겠다고 약속한 바 있지만 그 약속은 1%도 이행되지 않았다.

We give so much and we get so little in return. I’ve been a critic of NATO for many years and yet I’ve done more to help NATO than any other president by far, than any other person. You wouldn’t have NATO if I didn’t get involved in my 1st term.

미국은 아낌없이 퍼주지만 제대로 된 대접을 받지 못했다. 난 NATO를 비판하는 입장이지만 그동안 그 어떤 대통령보다도, 그 어떤 사람보다도 NATO를 위해 많은 걸 했다. 만일 내가 1기 임기 때 나서지 않았다면 지금 NATO는 존재하지 않을 것이다.

It would not have started if the 2020 presidential election wasn’t rigged.

만일 2020 선거가 부정선거로 치러지지 않았다면 (즉, 본인이 대통령이었다면), 우크라이나 전쟁을 벌어지지 않았을 것이다.

I settled 8 other wars. Putin called me, Armenia – Azerbaijan. He said, “I cannot believe you settled that one, they were going on for 35 years”. I settled it in one day and Putin called me. He said, “you know, I cannot believe I’ve worked in that war for 10 years trying to settle it. I couldn’t do it.”

난 8개의 전쟁을 막았다. 한번은 푸틴이 내게 전화를 걸어 ‘내가 10년이 넘도록 중재하려고 했지만 실패한 아르메니아-아제르바이잔 분쟁을 당신은 불과 하루 만에 해결했다’고 말했다.

I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force.

(그린란드를 얻기 위해) 우린 무력을 쓸 필요가 없다, 무력을 쓰고 싶지 않다, 아니 – 무력을 쓰지 않겠다.

What we have gotten out of NATO is nothing except to protect Europe from the Soviet Union and now Russia.

미국은 NATO로부터 얻는 것 없이 그저 유럽을 소련, 그리고 지금은 러시아에게서 보호하는 부담만을 안고 있다.

All we are asking for is to get Greenland, including right title and ownership, because you need the ownership to defend it.

(그린란드를 미국이 보호해야 유럽도 안전할 수 있으며) 미국이 그린란드를 제대로 지키기 위해 그 소유권을 미국에게 양도해야 한다.

I realized that we have many places like that where they are making a fortune because of the US. Without the US, they wouldn’t be making anything.

전세계 많은 나라들이 미국이 적자를 감수해 준 덕분에 먹고 살고 있다. 미국이 없었다면 그들은 진작에 끝장이 났을 것이다.
