밤의 장막을 넘어서 夜を超えて Beyond the Night's Veil by Seren Lee 2023 Oil on Linen 60.6×60.6×3.5 cm

  사나운 바다의 포효는 마치 인간의 절망과 닮아있다. 절망에 빠진 이는 죽음을 최후의 희망으로 생각하지만, 죽을 수조차 없다는 것에 대해 크게 낙심하고 절망한다. 격앙된 절망은 끝없이 고조되어 기세등등하고, 이에 관통당한 사람은 자기 파괴를 하지 않으면 극심한 불안과 고통을 느낀다. 그러나 바다의 노도는 언젠가 멎는다. 우리는 그런 바다를 바라보며 인간의 삶 또한 그러기를 바라는 것이다. 바다는 모든 것을 받아들여 주므로 ‘바다’라는 말도 있듯이, 요동치는 슬픔을 끌어안아 주는 다정함이 있다. 그 다정함을 위안 삼아, 태양은 밤을 넘어 고개를 들어 올린다.

  The roar of the raging sea is much like human despair. Those in despair often consider death as their last hope, but when they realize they can't even die, they become disheartened and shattered. Elevated despair can grow boundlessly, and people caught in such despair feel compelled to destroy themselves, consumed by intense anxiety and suffering. However, the fury of the sea eventually subsides. As we gaze upon such a sea, we hope that our lives, too, will follow suit. The sea embraces everything, just as the word 'sea' suggests, and it holds a tenderness that comforts the surging sorrow. We accept this kindness as healing, and today, once again, the sun rises beyond the night.

  荒海の咆哮はまさに人間の絶望に似ている。絶望に陥った人は死を最後の希望と思い込むが、死ぬことさえできないということに落胆し、また砕け散る。昂った絶望は底なしに高まって意気揚々とする。このような絶望に突き抜かれた人は己を破壊しなければと、激しい不安や苦痛の飲み込まれる。しかし、海の怒涛はいずれ止む。我々はそのような海を眺めながら自分たちの人生もまたそうであることを願うのだ。海は全てを受け入れるが上「うみ」という話もある様に、そこには揺れ上がる悲しみを包み込んでくれる優しさがある。その優しさを癒しとして受け取り、今日も太陽は夜を越えて身を上げるのであった。
