ENGINEERING?


Even after working in engineering for 35 years, I still find it difficult to give a clear answer when someone asks me, “What exactly is engineering?”.

It is a word I use almost every day, yet when pressed for a precise definition, I hesitate. I have searched in many places for a clear definition, but I have not yet found one. Perhaps this is because the term is used so broadly that it is difficult to capture its meaning in a single sentence. In fact, what matters more than the definition itself is understanding how engineering is actually carried out in practice.


Although it is not a strict definition, I would like to introduce a description that explains quite well how engineering is conducted in the plant industry.


An Oil & Gas facility project is usually developed in 4(four) steps.

Mr. Hervé Baron, in his book The Oil & Gas Engineering Guide, divides the development of an Oil & Gas project into four stages and explains them as follows:


1. The business planning phase,

Objective : Define the Business opportunity

Content :Technical assessment, milestone schedule, estimated cost range

Deliverables : Functional requirements, economic evaluation

35년을 엔지니어링 업무에 종사했지만, 주변에서 엔지니어링이 무엇이냐는 질문을 받으면 아직도 '엔지니어링이란 이런 것이다'라고 딱히 답을 하지 못합니다. 늘 입에 붙어 있는 말이면서도 그렇습니다. 명확한 정의를 알기 위해 이곳저곳 찾아보았지만 아직까지 찾지 못했습니다. 하긴 워낙 광범위하게 사용되는 단어이다 보니 오히려 명확한 정의를 내리기가 어려운 것 같다는 생각이 들기도 합니다. 사실 용어의 정의보다는 실제 어떻게 진행되는지를 아는 것이 더 중요하겠지요. 엔지니어링의 정의는 아니지만, 플랜트 산업에서 엔지니어링이 어떻게 진행되는지 비교적 잘 설명된 내용이 있어 소개하고자 합니다.


Mr. Herve Baron은 그의 저서 'The Oil & Gas Engineering Guide에서 Oil & Gas Project'의 에서 엔지니어링을 4 단계로 구분하고 다음과 같이 설명하고 있습니다.

4. The facility Detailed Engineering and Construction
