램지어 교수가 싫다
역사 속 성폭력 '위안부' - 교포 아이의 이유있는 항의
하버드 로스쿨의 석좌교수라는 램지어 교수의 망발이 있었습니다.
뉴스를 접한 당일날, 램지어 교수의 하버드 학교 이매일로 욕을 한바가지 써서 보냈었지요. 하필 로스쿨 교수에게 시비를 거는게 어쩐지 신경쓰였지만 (예, 저는 약자입니다...), 그따위 논문이 세상에 나온다는 것에 도저히 가만히 있을 수 없어서 작정하고 마구마구 못된 소리를 했습니다. 뭐 논문을 평가할 만한 심각한 이야기는 하나도 안했구요 - (해도 어디 제가 저놈과 영어가 되겠습니까..)
그냥, 바로 너 미쳤냐로 시작해서 .. 네 논리대로라면, 6백만명의 유대인은 독일을 위해 자발적으로 죽었냐, 북미 인디언들은 백인을 위해 스스로 목매달았냐, 위안부가 돈 받았다는 계약서, 송금 영수증, 세금 증명서를 제시해라, 애비가 딸 팔았다는 집구석 이름과 주소를 대라, 위안부가 받은게 아니라 네 놈이 받았지, 그 돈으로 비행기 표 사서 일본으로 꺼져라, 대대손손 검색되어 욕받이가 되게 해주마...로 끝나는, 참 개인적이고 감정적인, 아주 캐주얼한 이매일이었습니다.
그럼에도 밤새 분이 안풀려, 다음날 등교길 큰 딸래미에게 이야기를 했습니다. 큰 애는 만 16세이지만 학교를 일찍 가서 현재 대학교 1학년을 끝내가고 있습니다. 고등학교 과정을 홈스쿨하는 동안, 세계사 대신에 동아시아 역사를 선택했고, 자연스레 일제 강점기와 2차 세계대전을 일으킨 일본의 과오(!)에 대해 공부했었습니다. 나이가 어려 (작년이니까 15세였음) 관련 영화를 보여주지는 않았지만, 위안부 할머니들에 대해서도 웹사이트를 통해 배우구요.. (각시탈은 다 봤습니다 ^^)
분노로 씩씩거리며 며칠간 다른 교포 친구들과 통화하는 걸 보았습니다. 제 아이보다는 두어살 많지만, 각자 다른 주에 흩어져있는 대학생들로, 오랜만에 줌 미팅까지 하며 뭔가 하는 것 같더니, 며칠전에 드디어 편지를 가져왔네요. 하버드 운영진과 로스쿨 관련자, 그리고 각자가 속한 지역에 있는 몇몇 대학의 여성학, 역사학, 사회학, 일본/한국학 전공 교수들에게 보내겠답니다. (공동으로 쓴 건 아니고, 개인 플레이입니다)
역시 내 딸이다 웃으며, 동부에 살면 같이 하버드에 가서 데모라도 할텐데.. 했더니, 까만 치마에 흰저고리를 입어야 한다고 거드네요. 그게 3.1 운동 할 때 입었던 거라구요. 어리지만 뭔가 해야한다는 마음가짐이 예쁜고 기특합니다. 평생 검은 머리 외국인이라고 욕 먹겠지만, 그래도 이만큼 정신 똑바로 박힌 아이들도 있다는 게 다행입니다. 변호사가 되겠다는 아이의 꿈이, 이렇게라도 램지어 교수와 맞짱 한번 떠보면서 (흠집도 하나 내지 못하겠지만요.. ㅠ) 더욱 단단하게 자라났으면 좋겠습니다.
편지 뒤에 램지어 교수가 어떤 헛소리를 했는지 조목조목 간추린 것도 첨부했는데, 다들 내용을 아실테고, 여기 붙이기에는 너무 길어 패쓰 합니다. 아이가 쓴 항의 편지의 인트로입니다;

Before we begin- freedom of speech doesn’t apply to history. You don’t get to go around spreading lies and dangerous misinformation about our world on the front of “free speech”. The existence of racism, islamophobia, and all the other -isms and -phobias aren’t up for question. The crimes committed by the Japanese government from 1910-1945 aren’t up for debate either.
I’m not going to sit here and write an article attacking Dr. Ramseyer because the reality is- he has a Ph.D. He is Dr. J. Mark Ramseyer, not some random white man on the internet who is weirdly obsessed with Japan. He is a random white man on the internet whose weird obsession with Japan lead to an unethically obtained Harvard degree and that’s more than what most people can dream of having- and that is the problem.
Having a Harvard degree and a teaching job, ethically obtained or not, comes with massive responsibility. Harvard University is among the top universities in the world and the reality is, graduates are automatically trusted and labelled as credible sources. Professors are there to honestly educate students free from biases and prejudices per the university motto, veritas- the latin word for truth. If you can’t do that- then you don’t belong at Harvard. Over 20% of Harvard’s student body is Asian, and Harvard is failing 100% of them.
Dr. Ramseyer has continued to spread blatant lies and dangerous misinformation regarding the “feud” between Japan and Korea for many years through dozens of publications- the most recent of which labels Koreans during the time of the Kanto Massacre as “gangs” that “torched buildings, planted bombs, and poisoned water supplies” and falsely claims that “comfort women” were paid prostitutes.
Dr. Ramseyer’s actions are despicable, but we are forgetting about Harvard University and its role in this controversy. This man’s education and subsequent employment at Harvard has done nothing but cheapen the Harvard name more than the general public already has. He has discredited the entire law school and Asian studies department and contributed to the already tense relationship between Japan and Korea.
I encourage Dr. Ramseyer to re-evaluate his relationship with Korean and Japanese history and law and publicly drop his title of “Mitsubishi Professor of Japanese Legal Studies” to step-back and truly educate himself on the history of the Mitsubishi brand, the Japanese occupation of Korea, and Japan’s role during WWII. I’m sick of reading this man’s crap, and I hope that the next time I have to read one of his articles, it’s for a good reason.
On that note, I call on Cambridge University Press to remove Dr. Ramseyer’s article from The Cambridge Handbook on Privatization and for Elsevier to do the same for The International Review of Law and Economics.
