[Frances Ha]

나는. 저 '언저리 시절'로. 돌아가고싶지. 않다.

영화를 보면서 가장 강력하게 느낀 감정이었다.

카피라이터라는 직업의 언저리. 안정된 직장의 언저리. 

살고싶은 동네의 언저리. 바라던 연애의 언저리. 지키고 싶은 관계의 언저리.

이십대, 언저리 시절에 대한 비애는 프란시스의 대화에서 고스란히 드러난다.

Andy: So what do you do? 
Frances: It's complicated. 
Andy: Is it because what you do is complicated? 
Frances: No, it's because I don't do it.  

십수년전쯤, 나는 깊고 어두운 터널 안에 있었다.

저 멀리 빛이 보였다. 터널의 끝이라는 신호. 조금만 더 걸어가면, 

이 터널만 나가면, 모든 보이지 않는 것들이, 모든 잡히지 않는 것들이,

태양아래 선명하게 드러날것날거라는 희망(혹은 희망고문)이 몸을 움직이게 했다. 

자꾸만 넘어져도 계속 달리게 했다.

그러나 서서히 그 빛이 커지고, 이제 '밖'이 시작되는 구나. 라고 느낀적은 없었다.

그저 삼십대의 어느날 문득, 언제부터였는지도 모르게,

내가 '모든 것이 선명한' 태양 아래 존재하고 있음을 알게됐다. 

(그것은 그것대로 또 다른 비애이기는 하지만)

Frances: It's that thing when you're with someone, and you love them and they know it, and they love you and you know it... but it's a party... and you're both talking to other people, and you're laughing and shining... and you look across the room and catch each other's eyes... but - but not because you're possessive, or it's precisely sexual... but because... that is your person in this life. And it's funny and sad, but only because this life will end, and it's this secret world that exists right there in public, unnoticed, that no one else knows about. It's sort of like how they say that other dimensions exist all around us, but we don't have the ability to perceive them. That's - That's what I want out of a relationship. Or just life, I guess. 

Frances: Sometimes it's good to do what you're supposed to do when you're supposed to do it. 

Frances: Do I look old to you? 
Benji: No. Yes. 
Frances: How old? 
Benji: Older than I am. 
Frances: Older than 27? 
Benji: No. 27 is old, though.  

Benji: Are you still undateable? 
Frances: Oh yes, very undateable.

뉴욕을 배경으로하는 영화의 여주인공이라고 믿기 어려운

너무도 현실적인 육체를 가진 배우라서, 오히려 공감이 더 크게 됐다.

프란시스 하, 어두운 터널을 질주하고 있는
