계동 이잌: 세월의 메이크업

안국역 3번 출구로 나오면 왼쪽으로 계동길이 이어진다. 첫번째 사거리의 왼편 모퉁이에 2층짜리 작은 벽돌 건물이 있다. 가로 12미터, 세로 6미터쯤으로 평수로는 겨우 20평이 좀 넘는 레스토랑 공간이다. 오래된 벽돌 건물이야 특히 북촌에선 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 하지만 이 건물에는 유별난점이 있다. 시간때 묻은 적갈색의 벽돌 벽 둘레에 마치 허리띠를 두른것 처럼 보이는 흰색 캐노피가 그 중 하나다. 1층과 2층 사이에 달린 이 캐노피는 작고 하얀 정사각형 타일이 두겹으로 나란히 덮혀있다. 하지만 군데군데 타일이 깨지고 떨어져나가 짙은 회색 회벽이 그대로 드러나는 모양새다. 보통이라면 드러나지 않아야 할 모습은 이것 뿐만이 아니다.

입구 왼편 상단에 달린 명패 역시 애초에 떼어냈어야할 부분이다. 물론 아는 사람만 아는 얘기겠지만 지금의 레스토랑이 들어서기 전부터 달려있던 누군가의 이름이 한문으로 음각되어진 명패이기 때문이다. 그러니까 현 주인의 이름이 아니라 그곳을 거쳐간 과거의 거주민 이름이 떡하니 걸려있는 셈이다. 마치 학년이 바뀌어 한층 위의 교실을 써야하는데도 그자리에 그대로 앉아있는 꼬마의 엉뚱한 모습같달까. 타일이 벗겨진 캐노피나 전주인의 명패처럼 보이는 것들만큼 보이지 않는 것 역시 이 건물을 특징짓는데 한몫한다.

레스토랑 내부에는 공간을 가로막는 기둥이 하나도 보이지 않는다. 워낙에 작은 공간이다보니 구조적으로 기둥을 건물 가장자리에만 배치해도 문제가 없기 때문이다. 그렇다면 벽돌로 쌓아올린 외벽이 건물 내 2층 천장이며 지붕의 무게까지 모두 지탱한다는 뜻이다. 실제로 무게를 견디는 역할을 하는 벽돌식 외벽은 사실 사라진지 꽤 오래됐다. 철근 콘크리트와 철제 기둥 및 보 구조가 도입되면서 벽은 유릿장처럼 얇아져도 안정성에 아무런 문제가 없어졌기 때문이다. 1900년 초중반에 이미 그런 구조가 자리잡았으니 족히 100년은 지난 벽 구조식 공간인 듯 싶지만, 이 곳에도 철제 기둥과 보가 숨어있다. 1층에는 덩치큰 감청색 계단 뒤로, 2층에는 가볍게 칠해진 베이지색 페인트 뒤로 건물 전체의 무게를 지탱하는 여섯개의 기둥이 버티고 있다.

이 건물은 여러모로 시간의 흔적 그 자체를 마치 전시하듯 보여주고 있다. 퇴적된 세월을 꾸며내어서라도 시간을 보여주려는 의도가 엿보인다. 뭐 사실 그런 의도로 벽과 기둥을 이렇게 구성했는지는 모를 일이다. 하지만 계동이 자리잡은 북촌이 북촌인 만큼 수십 수백년 쌓인 시간만큼 매력적인 얼굴도 없다는건 분명하다.

Walking up the stairs out of exit 3 in Anguk station, Gyedong street begins to the left. 3 minutes walk along the street leads you to the Iik. An old and cozy, two-story brick building sitting at the corner of an intersection. This restaurant, around 6m by 12m, is small enough to stand still with no column at all inside. It gives you an impresstion that it might be the rare case of load bearing brick wall, which is actually not the case. Six steel Columns are standing at for corners and two points at the sides, but those are hidden in both the first and second floors. On the first floor, quite chunky dark turquoise colored staircase is hiding almost the half of the interior wall adjacent to the road. Upstairs, interior finish with beige paint hides the columns although completely exposed.

A load bearing wall, and that made with bricks, has long been an old relic since the invention of reinforced concrete strcuture in early 1900s. In most of modern brick buildings afterwards, bricks were just ornamental envelop to make an aesthetic effect on the facades. They have a functional wall hidden inside the brick facade. What differentiates this small building is the absence of the hidden functional wall. Seamingly less than 20 cm thick brick walls are all there is. This naked thinness visually maintains the load of time that this building has gone through.

The small nameplate attached on the left of the entrance is another proof that time is the key to read the design of this building. Chinese character is not anymore used as often as before, and is likewise the nameplate. The one here is even not of the current restaurant owner but the pediatrician who used this building before the restaurant came in. All buildings are bound by time. Time wears out whatever is inside itself, just like some of the white square tiles on the canopy are lost and empty. Ruin is beautiful though when cautiously preserved.
