국립 현대 미술관 서울관:
가로와 세로의 힘으로
국립현대미술관 서울관은 크게 두가지 방향에서 진입할 수 있다. 첫번째로 광화문 방향에서 경복국 동쪽 담장으로 대로를 따라 걸어들어오면 구관에 마련된 미술관 입구를 먼저 만나게 된다. 바로 전시장으로 들어갈 수 있어 효율적인 동선이라고 할 수 있다. 두번째는 효율성과는 거리가 멀어서 미술관을 구성하는 모든 동들을 통과해 마지막에 전시장 입구를 만나는 길이다. 창덕궁 방향에서 북촌로를 따라 조금씩 굽어지고 경사진 언덕을 걸어가면 신관의 끄트머리 부분을 먼저 만나게 된다. 길 왼편으로 눈에 먼저 들어오는건 미술관의 디지털 정보관(도서관) 건물이다. 도서관 건물은 1층으로 나지막하게 중앙의 잔디밭을 둘러싸는 형태로 자리잡고 있다. 그 맞은편에 오설록 티하우스가 들어선 공간은 교육동의 일부다. 단층의 도서관에 비해 교육동은 3층으로 되어있어 꽤 높이가 있는 편이다. 정원의 왼편 모서리로 이어지는 정보관과 교육동 사이의 좁은 통로를 따라가다 다시 왼편으로 꺽이는 좁은 램프를 통과하면 비로소 전시관이 눈에 들어온다.
미술관 정면의 반대쪽 뒷편에서 바라본 모습 (동측면도)You have two selections to come to the MMCA Seoul. The first is walking from Gwanghwamun, along the eastern wall of Kyungbok Palace. It lead you to the entrance of the old red brick building. This is an efficient journey to directly enter the exhibition hall. In contrast, the second, far from efficiency, lets you walk through every wings of the museum complex before reaching the entry to the exhibition. You walk from Changdeokgung palace along the Bukchon-ro, which has organic curves and easy hills to encounter the tip of newly built wings. It is the digital library, a low rise single story building surrounding a cozy square garden at the center. Apposite to the library is the back of education wing that accomodates Osullok Tea House. The Education wing is taller than the library having three floors. But, it doen't feel that high because it is more largely spread on the ground. The main exhibition wing finally appears when you pass through the narrow corridor between the library and the education wing, turn left to walk down along a straight narrow ramp.
그러나 아직도 전시관의 입구에 도달하려면 멀었다. 램프를 따라 내려온 뒤에 전시동이 보이긴 하지만 긴 담장이 앞을 막고있기 때문에 다시 오른쪽으로 방향을 틀어 언덕을 마저 내려가야 한다. 다만 이번에는 아주 폭이 넓고 시원하게 뚫린 경사로다. 완만한 경사를 따라 내려가다보면 초반에는 회색빛 교육동의 상단이 경사로 윗부분을 지붕처럼 가로막고 있어서 정면의 시야가 제한된다. 그러니까 멀찍이 경복국 건너편의 인왕산의 산세가 교육동 상단에 가려지는 셈이다. 하지만 조금씩 걸어가며 지면이 낮아질수록 시야가 조금씩 트이면서 교육동 지붕 아래로 인왕산의 산세가 조금씩 모습을 드러낸다. 경사가 끝나고 도로변을 마주할 즈음에는 온전히 인왕산의 모습이 드러난다. 해가 지는 서쪽 방향이기 때문에 저녁무렵 이 길을따라 내려가면 석양지는 풍경에 빠져들게 된다.
But, there's ways to go before reaching the entrance. You can see the Exhibition Wing at the end of the ramp, but quite tall walls are blocking the sight. It makes you turn right and walk down the gentle slop again. This time, different from the ramp, it is a wide open slope. At first, the scene ahead is distracted by the upper wall of Education wing high above your head. So, the scenic view of the Inwang mountain far away at front is hidden. But, as you walk down the road, the view gradually reveals underneath the wall overhang. Especially in the evening, the sunset above the Inwang mountain is beautiful.
전시 관람이 목적이라면 아직 갈길이 남았다. 인왕산을 마주하고 이번엔 왼편으로 꺽어 50미터가량을 걸어가야만 비로소 벽돌로 된 구관 건물의 입구에 다다르게 된다. 이렇게 50미터를 걷는 중간지점에 또다른 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 길 왼편으로 커다란 마당이 보이고, 그 주변을 둘러싸는 전시동 건물이 눈에 들어온다. 이 장면은 처음으로 만났던 자그마한 잔디정원과 그걸 둘러싸고 있던 도서관 건물을 떠오르게 한다. 정원의 스케일이 커지고 건물의 높이 등 규모가 좀더 커진것 뿐 구성은 거의 비슷하다. 차이가 있다면 건물들의 외벽을 둘러싸고 있는 타일들의 색상이다.
Now a little more to go, if you are to watch the exhbition. Turning left from the beautiful mountain view and walking about 50 meters appears the official entrance of a red brick covered building. What's interesting is that you can see something else between the 50 meter walk to the entry. The backyard of the brick building is wide open to your left, which remind of the small garden and the library wing that you first met at the back. It's almost the same composition except that the garden is scaled up, and the height and size of the building larger. The only outstanding difference is the color of tiles that wrap the buildings.
삼청동쪽에서 내려오는길에 보이는 미술관 풍경 (북측면도)정보관(도서관)은 짙은 회색빛 타일로 마감되어 있고, 전시동의 신관부분은 살색에 가까운 베이지색 타일로 덮혀있다. 그리고 정보관에서 전시동으로 이동하는 사이에 자리잡고 있던 교육동의 경우 회색과 베이지색 타일이 모두 사용된다. 북촌로를 따라 후면에서 바라보는 미술관은 무채색의 회색빛이라 차분하게 가라앉고, 그 너머의 경복궁 일부나 인왕산의 자연경관이 오히려 알록달록하게 강조되는 모양새다. 그에 반해 광화문쪽에서 단번에 입구로 진입하는 길에서 만나는 미술관의 이미지는 베이지색이라 구건물 벽돌의 적색과도 조화를 이루며 따뜻하고 밝은 느낌을 준다. 이렇게 서로다른 색상의 건물 외양을 하나로 묶는것은 세로로 긴 타일의 모양이다. 색상과 크기에는 차이가 있지만 비율은 거의 흡사하다. 가로 세로가 1:3.75정도의 비율로 기다란 회색과 베이지색의 타일들은 대체로 나지막하고 넓게 펼쳐진 미술관 건물들이 드러내는 수평적인 반복에 수직적인 변화를 가져온다. 가로로 길게 펼쳐지는 물리적 공간 사이사이에 자그마한 수직적인 요소들이 더해져서 만들어내는 시각적인 공간, 그렇게 미술관 건축을 요약할 수 있겠다.
The exterior of the library building is finished with dark gray tiles, and the newly built exhibition wing with beige tiles. In addition, the education wing between the library and the exhibition wing has both of gray and beige tiles. As a result, the view from the back of the museum complex is calm, dominated by dark gray, which makes the colorful natural surroundings more stand out. In contrast, the view from the front is much lighter and warmer by its beige tiles also in harmony with redish bricks. What binds these varying colors of buildings is the vertically long shape of tiles. Despite the difference in color, the proportion is almost the same, 1:3.75. These long tiles in beige and gray brings in vertical dynamism to the overall widely spreadout low rise buildings. The combination of the horizontal spread of physical space and the small vertical repetition of long tiles, that is the MMCA Seoul.
