When the City Lightens Up All Night Long

Today’s story is going to be a bit different. This is a photo story of the White Night 2016.

White Night is an annual event in Melbourne, Australia where the whole city brightens up with projections and live music both indoors and outdoors. Galleries and museums let their doors wide open throughout the entire night and both cultural or non-cultural venues are embellished with art installations.

It’s a day that throughout the night, both the young and the old come out to the streets where the cars are blocked out, and only trams in certain routes run. Every other corner has artists playing a guitar, a drum, singing or dancing. From 7 in the evening until 7 the next morning, the city is filled with lights, art, laughter and fun.

As a former art student and current art history student who believes that art should be for everyone, not for the privileged or the limited groups of the society, an event like the White Night is a great example of what the city can offer for its people in terms of art appreciation. The doors were wide open to everyone without any charge and people were allowed to both enjoy and express themselves through art.

I guess there is nothing like seeing for oneself, and a set of photos would be the closest of ‘seeing for oneself’ for those who weren’t there for the White Night. So here they are:

Cultural venues open for the night

ACMI: As a place for moving images, there were multitude of video installations inside a building, where we spent the longest time, watching trivial matters like crowd-sourced cat videos shown in a proper cinema setting to watching a thought-provoking and sophisticated movie by Daniel Crooks. There were places for virtual reality, game and many more.

NGV: Projections with music that lighted up the entire front façade and the gallery was open throughout the night, including the popular exhibition, Andy Warhol — Ai Weiwei.

My favorite piece of the night was Still Here by an aboriginal artist Josh Muir at the NGV. A huge projection on the front façade of the gallery was not only spectacular for its sheer size and the wholeness of the art form combining painting, music and light projection, but also the narrative that the artist was trying to convey was powerful and impactful. My friend and I stood there for at least an hour, watching it repeat five times or so.

Sunrise by the river

I try to see sunsets as many times I can but I definitely don’t see a sunrise often. The fact that the White Night was on for the whole night until 7 in the morning meant that we are going to see the sunrise, and it would only make sense for us to see the sunrise by the river, considering its proximity to the city where the events were held. So we sat by the river on a damp grass waiting for the sunrise with a gypsy music playing loud from far.

My day that started earlier during the day, only ended at 8:30 in the morning. Cycling up the empty streets where people were heading home after a long night seemed oddly lively. The city that didn’t sleep was slowly starting its day with the people who were having an ordinary Sunday morning. The sun chased away the chilliness that artificial lights couldn’t. A long-awaited warmth of the sunlight came in through the jumper that I forcefully took from a friend. It was a long, white night.

오늘의 이야기는 조금 다르다. 오늘은 멜버른의 ‘백야 2016'를 사진으로 풀어내려고 한다.

백야 (화이트 나이트)는 멜버른의  연중행사이다. 도시 전체가 빛을 이용한 설치 미술과 라이브 음악으로 밝게 빛나는 밤이다. 갤러리와 박물관들은 밤 내내 문을 활짝 열어두고, 문화적 장소와 그렇지 않은 곳까지도 설치 예술로 장식된다.

이 날은 밤 새 차를 차단하고 일부의 트램만 다니는 길들에 사람들이 남녀노소를 불구하고 나오는 날이다. 골목마다 사람들이 기타를 치고, 드럼을 연주하며, 노래를 하거나 춤을 춘다. 저녁 7시부터 다음날 아침 7시까지 도시는 빛과 예술, 웃음과 재미로 채워진다.

그림을 그렸던 학생으로서, 그리고 현재 미술사를 전공하는 학생으로서 예술은 특정 그룹 등이 아닌 모든 사람들을 위한 것이라고 믿는다. 그러니까 이 행사와 같은 것은 도시가 사람들에게 예술 관람에 관해 어떠한 것을 제공할 수 있는지 보여주는 좋은 사례이다. 모든 사람들에게 비용을 요구하지 않고 문들은 활짝 열려있었고 사람들은 동시에 예술을 즐기거나 이를 통해 스스로를 표현할 수 있었다.

백문이 불여일견이라고 실제로 이 행사를 보지 못한 사람들에게는 그에 가장 가까운 방법으로 — 그러니까 사진들로 — ‘백야'를 보여주겠다.

밤 새 열린 문화예술 공간

ACMI: 평소에 영상을 다루는 곳으로, 건물 내에 다양한 비디오 작품들이 있었다. 이 곳에서 우리는 가장 오랜 시간을 보냈는데 영화관에서 웃긴 고양이 동영상 모음을 보거나 생각할 여지를 두는 작품을 감상했다. 가상현실을 체험할 수 있는 곳과 게임을 할 수 있는 곳 등 다양한 활동들이 제공되었다.

NGV: 전면을 비춘 프로젝터의 빛과 이에 맞춘 음악이 우리를 맞이했다. 인기 많은 앤디 워홀 — 아이웨이웨이 전시를 포함해서 갤러리를 밤새 열려 있었다.

내가 제일 인상 깊게 본 작품은 원주민 작가인 Josh Muir의 ‘아직도 있다'라는 작품이었다. NGV의 전면을 비추는 거대한 크기의 작품 자체가 이와 맞춘 웅장한 음악과 함께 압도하기도 했지만 작가가 전달하고자 하는 내용이 매우 강력하고 효과적이었다. 친구와 나는 이 곳에서 아마 한 시간도 넘게 서서 다섯 번도 넘게 이 작품을 본 것 같다.

강변에서의 일출

나는 일몰은 자주 보려고 하는데 사실 일출은 그만큼 보지 못하는 편이다. 이 행사가 아침 7시까지 이어진다는 것은 우리는 일출을 보게 된다는 것이었다. 특히나 우리는 강가 근처에 있었으므로 해가 뜨는 것을 보기 위해 강변으로 내려가는 것은 너무나 당연했다. 그래서 우리는 강변의 축축한 잔디밭에 앉아 멀리서 들리는 집시 음악을 들으며 해가 뜨기를 기다렸다.

그 날 오후 일찌감치 시작한 이 하루는 아침 8시 반이 되어서야 끝을 맺었다. 길고 긴 밤을 보낸 후 집으로 가는 사람들이 있는 텅 빈 길은 이상할 정도로 생기가 돌았다. 잠을 자지 않은 도시는 천천히 하루를 시작하고 있었고 일부는 여느 때와 같은 일요일을 보내고 있었다. 인공적인 빛이 아닌 햇빛이 드디어 쌀쌀했던 날씨를 쫓아내었고, 기다렸던 햇살의 따스함이 친구한테서 뺏어 입은 스웨터의 구멍 사이로 느껴졌다. 길고 긴 밤을 우리는 하얗게 지새웠다.
