소설은 번역 가능한가.

토니 모리슨의 <빌러비드>를 읽다가

All he could think of was tracking dogs, although Hi Man said the rain they left in gave that no chance of success. Alone, the last man with buffalo hair among the ailing Cherokee, Paul D finally woke up and, admitting his ignorance, asked how he might get North. Free North. Magical North. Welcom-ing, benevolent North. The Cherokee smiled and looked around. The flood rains of a month ago had turned everything to steam and blossoms.

“That way,” he said, pointing. “Follow the tree flowers,” he said. “Only the tree flowers. As they go, you go. You will be where you want to be when they are gone.”

So he raced from dogwood to blossoming peach. When they thinned out he headed for the cherry blossoms, then magnolia, chin-aberry, pecan, walnut and prickly pear. At last he reached a field of apple trees whose flowers were just becoming tiny knots of fruit. Spring sauntered north, but he had to run like hell to keep it as histraveling companion. From February to July he was on the lookout for blossoms.

노예로 팔리기 위해 아프리카를 떠나 아메리카로 향하는 대서양 중앙항로의 노예선을 연상시키는 끔찍한 공간에 있다가 장마를 계기로 쇠사슬에 묶인 동료들과 함께 폴 디는 탈출을 하게 된다. 그 공간을 벗어난 ‘노예’들은 토착민인 체로키족을 만난다. 폴 디가 묻는다. 어떻게 해야 북쪽으로 갈 수 있냐고. 그는 백인들이 노예를 추적하기 위한 개들을 이끌고 자신들을 찾아오는 게 두렵다 (All he could think of was tracking dogs)

체로키족은 북쪽으로 가기 위해서는 새롭게 꽃이 피는 나무를 찾아가라고 말한다(Follow the tree flower). 남부에 일찍 찾아온 봄으로 인해 꽃이 이미 피웠다가 지는 곳을 떠나서 이제 봄이 되어 꽃을 피우기 시작한 곳들을 따라가라고 말한다.

폴 디는 그 말을 따라 북쪽으로 향했다. 그 표현을 시작하는 문단이 한국어로는 "그는 말채나무에서 꽃이 만발한 복숭아나무로 달려갔다."이다. 그런데, 영어 원문은 다음과 같다. "So he raced from dogwood to blossoming peach" 역자는 (문학동네 번역본) dogwood를 말채나무라고 번역했다. 봄에 흰 꽃이 피는 말채나무는 미국 버지니아주를 상징하는 꽃이기도 하다.

그런데, dogwood를 말채나무로 번역하니, tracking dog을 두려워하며 북부로 향하던 폴 디의 탈출을 'dogwood를 떠나 꽃이 만발한 복숭아 나무로 달려갔다'라는 토니 모리슨이 시적인 문장과 어감이 살지 않는다. 물론 내게도 더 나은 번역어는 없다.  <빌러비드>라는 놀라운 소설을 반복해서 읽다가, 영문판을 함께 사서 군데군데 함께 찾아보며 읽고 있다. 종종 경이롭게 아름다운 영어 문장의 어감을 도저히 살릴 길 없는 한국어 번역을 만나게 된다.
