승무

얇은 사(紗) 하이얀 고깔은

고이 접어서 나빌레라.

파르라니 깎은 머리

박사(薄紗) 고깔에 감추오고,

두 볼에 흐르는 빛이

정작으로 고와서 서러워라.

빈 대(臺)에 황촉(黃燭)불이 말없이 녹는 밤에

오동(梧桐)잎 잎새마다 달이 지는데,

소매는 길어서 하늘은 넓고

돌아설 듯 날아가며 사뿐이 접어 올린 외씨버선이여.

까만 눈동자 살포시 들어

먼 하늘 한개 별빛에 모두오고,

복사꽃 고운 뺨에 아롱질 듯 두 방울이야

세사(世事)에 시달려도 번뇌(煩惱)는 별빛이라.

휘어져 감기우고 다시 접어 뻗는 손이,

깊은 마음 속 거룩한 합장(合掌)인 양하고,

이 밤사 귀또리도 지새우는 삼경(三更)인데

(A Buddhist Dance)

A peaked hat, woven with white thread, is

Beautifully folded into a butterfly.

The bluish shaved head is hidden 

In that thinly-threaded hat.

The light streaming on her cheeks is 

Truly fair in sorrow.    

At night when the beeswax candle on an empty support is silently melted,

The moon is going down between the leaves of a paulownia tree.

The long sleeve is fluttering in the wide sky

And the toe of a finely rolled up sock is spinning and flying up.   

Softly raising her black eyes

She stares at a single star in the distant sky.

Her rosy cheeks are dappled with a couple of teardrops

As her agonies from worldly cares were dyed with starlight.    

The hands, bent and curled, recoiled and reaching out again, 

Look like the holy act of worship in deep heart. 

At this midnight when crickets are still awake chirping

A peaked hat, woven with white thread, is beautifully folded into a butterfly,

Seung-moo(A Buddhist Dance) literally means the dance by Buddhist monks in a ceremony. In reality, however, it is a kind of folk dance with a performer in a white monk robe, a canonical shawl on the shoulder and a peaked hat on a head.  

흰 장삼에 붉은 가사(袈裟)를 어깨에 두르고 나비처럼 곱게 접은 고깔을 펴 머리에 쓴 여승. 춤추는 그녀의 얼굴에 슬픈 아름다움이 서리고, 초가 타들어가는 밤은 깊어만 간다. 소맷자락을 흔들고, 사뿐히 버선코를 들어 올리며 가끔씩 고개를 들어 먼 하늘 별빛을 쫒는다. 붉은 뺨에 흐르는 눈물방울은 별빛에 물든 그녀의 번뇌인가? 그 애타는 손짓으로 그녀는 세속의 아픔을 털고 경건한 구도(求道)의 의식을 치른다. 귀뚜라미 울어대는 깊은 밤중에 그녀는 여전히 나비 모양 그녀의 고깔을 접는다.
