애가 5장 22절 : 주께서는 아무리 화가 나시어도 우리를 아주 잘라버리실 수는 없지 않습니까?
하나님 앞에서 우리는 어디까지 진실해질 수 있을까. 이 질문을 품고 성경을 마주할 때 예레미야 애가는 빼놓을 수 없는 본문이라는 생각이 듭니다. 인간의 고통과 하나님의 정의, 그리고 그 사이에서 연단받는 믿음이 애가 전체를 통해 드러나기때문입니다.
예레미야는 이스라엘이 직면한 비극이 이스라엘의 죄에 대한 하나님의 심판임을 분명히 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 그는 그 사실때문에 백성과 거리를 두지 않았습니다. 그는 오히려 굶주림으로 쓰러진 아이들과 거리의 시신들, 무너진 제단 앞에서 이스라엘과 함께 울었습니다. 누구보다 죄의 실상을 정확히 알았던 예언자는 그 죄의 무게 속에서 백성들과 함께 통곡하는 사람으로 남았습니다.
여기서 우리는 중요한 사실 하나를 마주합니다. 진리를 아는 것과, 그 진리 앞에서 취하는 태도는 다를 수 있다는 것입니다. 단순한 성경에 대한 이해는 우리의 고통을 설명할 수 있을지는 몰라도, 그 고통을 함께 짊어지는 데까지 나아갈 수는 없습니다. 예레미야는 하나님의 진리를 이해하면서도 무감각해지지 않았고 오히려 하나님 앞에서 가장 깊은 눈물로 질문했습니다.
그의 울음은 백성을 향한 탄식이자 하나님을 향한 절규였습니다. “주께서는 우리를 아주 잘라버리실 수는 없지 않습니까?” 하는 마지막 물음은 단순한 절망이 아니라, 끊을 수 없는 관계에 대한 그의 단단한 믿음입니다. 이것은 심판 속에서도 자비를 향해 나아가는 기도이며 신뢰로 드리는 고백입니다.
예레미야 애가는 우리를 바로 그 기도의 자리에 초대합니다. 또 예레미야 애가는 죄와 고통, 심판과 자비가 얽힌 현실 앞에서 우리는 어떤 진실함으로 하나님 앞에 설 수 있을까하는 질문을 던집니다. 모든 것을 이해하지 못해도 하나님과의 관계를 포기하지 않았던 예레미야가 보여준 믿음의 길을 우리도 갈 수 있는지, 우리도 그 신앙의 자리에 설 수 있는지 예레미아 오늘 우리에게 묻고 있습니다.
Lamentations 5:22 : Can you really cut us off forever, even in your great anger?
How honest can we truly be before God? If we hold that question as we read Scripture, the book of Lamentations becomes an essential text. It lays bare the realities of human suffering, divine justice, and the faith that is refined in between.
Jeremiah knew full well that the tragedy facing Israel was the result of God’s judgment on their sin. But he did not distance himself from the people because of that knowledge. Instead, he wept with them, among starving children, corpses in the streets, and the ruins of the altar. The prophet who saw Israel’s sin most clearly was the same one who chose to remain in the ashes, lamenting with his people.
And here we encounter something crucial: knowing the truth is not the same as how we respond to it. A correct understanding of Scripture may explain our pain, but it doesn’t necessarily move us to bear that pain with others. Jeremiah, though he grasped the truth of God’s judgment, did not grow numb to it. Instead, he turned to God with the deepest of tears and asked the most human of questions.
His weeping was both a lament for the people and a cry to God. His final question "Can you really cut us off forever?" was not born of despair but of unbreakable trust. It was a prayer that reached for mercy even within judgment, a confession offered in faith.
Lamentations invites us into that very posture of prayer. It asks us: before the tangled reality of sin, suffering, judgment, and mercy, with what kind of truthfulness will we stand before God? Even when we don’t understand everything, can we still walk the path of faith shown by Jeremiah, who refused to let go of the relationship with God? Today, that same prophet asks if we, too, will take our place in that faith.
