God’s Judgment on Places
에스겔서 6:3 이스라엘 산들아, 주 여호와의 말씀을 들어라. 주 여호와께서 높고 낮은 산들과 강 유역과 골짜기에 대하여 이런 말씀을 하셨다. 내가 칼을 너희에게 보내 너희 산당을 없애 버리겠다.
인간은 시간과 공간이라는 구체적 틀 안에서 살아갑니다. 우리의 삶은 늘 특정한 시점과 특정한 장소 위에 존재합니다. 기쁨, 상실, 사랑, 배반 이 모든 것들이 언제나 어떤 순간, 어느 장소에서 일어납니다.
그래서 우리는 많은 경우 죄도 회개도 모두 '사람의 문제'라고만 생각합니다. 그러나 성경은 하나님의 심판은 인간을 넘어 인간이 몸담고 살아낸 시간과 공간 전체에 임한다고 말하고 있습니다.
에스겔 6장 3절에서 하나님은 산을 향해 말씀하십니다. 그곳은 사람들이 우상을 세우고 하나님을 떠난 장소였습니다. 그 산에는 인간의 손으로 만든 제단이 있었고 인간의 욕망과 타협이 새겨진 신당들이 자리 잡고 있었습니다.
공간은 더 이상 중립적이지 않습니다. 그곳에 무엇이 뿌리내렸는지 무엇을 위해 사용되었는지가 그 공간의 성격을 결정합니다. 시간이 기억을 저장하듯 공간 역시 의지와 선택의 흔적을 품습니다.
하나님이 그 산을 심판하신다는 것은 그 땅에 새겨진 죄의 기억과 질서 자체를 지워내시는 행위입니다. 창세기에서 물로 세상을 심판하실 때 인간만이 아니라 피조세계 전체가 함께 휩쓸렸던 것처럼 하나님의 심판은 언제나 관계 전체, 구조 전체, 공간 전체를 정화하는 사건입니다.
우리는 회복을 ‘나의 변화’로만 이해합니다. 그러나 하나님은 언제나 '새 하늘과 새 땅'을 약속하십니다. 회복은 한 인간에 관한 이야기로 머물지 않고 그가 살아갈 공간과 질서까지 새롭게 되는 것을 포함합니다.
에스겔서의 심판 장면은 참혹합니다. 제단은 무너지고 신당은 사라지며 그 땅은 한동안 아무것도 품지 못하는 황무지가 됩니다. 하지만 바로 그 자리에서 하나님은 회복을 위한 시작을 만드십니다. 모든 것을 걷어낸 그 자리 그 무의 공간에서 하나님은 다시 무엇인가를 심으십니다.
죄의 흔적을 제거하시는 하나님의 고통스러운 자비가 에스겔을 통해 전해집니다. 하나님의 심판은 목적 없는 파괴가 아니라 늘 회복을 위한 신실한 개입이라고 믿습니다.
Ezekiel 6:3 : Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places.
Human life always unfolds within the concrete boundaries of time and space. Every joy, loss, love, and betrayal takes place at a particular moment in a particular place.
Because of this, we often think of sin and repentance only as matters between people and God. But Scripture shows that God’s judgment reaches beyond individuals, it extends to the very time and space in which people have lived.
In Ezekiel 6:3, God speaks to the mountains. These were the places where people built altars to idols and turned away from Him. Upon those heights stood shrines etched with human desire and compromise, fashioned by human hands.
Space is never truly neutral. What has taken root there, and for what purpose it has been used, shapes its character. Just as time holds memories, space holds the imprint of will and choice.
When God declares judgment on the mountains, He is erasing the memory and order of sin carved into the land itself. As in Genesis, when the flood swept away not only humankind but the whole created order, God’s judgment always cleanses relationships, structures, and the very space they inhabit.
We tend to think of restoration as a matter of personal change. Yet God promises a “new heaven and a new earth.” True restoration is never just about a single person, it includes the renewal of the place and order in which that person will live.
The judgment scenes in Ezekiel are grim. Altars collapse, shrines vanish, and the land becomes barren, unable to hold life for a time. But it is in that very emptiness that God begins the work of renewal. In the cleared and silent space, He plants something new.
Through Ezekiel, we see the painful mercy of God, a mercy that removes every trace of sin so that restoration can truly begin. God’s judgment is never aimless destruction, but always His faithful intervention for the sake of renewal.
