Repentance That Brings God Joy
에스겔 18장 32절 : 주 여호와가 말하노라. 죽는 자의 죽는 것을 내가 기뻐하지 아니하노니, 너희는 스스로 돌이키고 살찌니라.
하나님은 죽는 자의 죽음을 기뻐하지 않으십니다. 하나님의 관심은 심판보다 생명에 있고, 파괴보다 회복에 있으며, 정죄보다 돌이킴에 있습니다. 죽음의 끝에 또 다른 죽음이 놓이는 것, 생의 마지막이 무(無)로 마감되는 것은 성경이 보여주는 하나님의 얼굴이 아닙니다.
하나님은 죽음을 통과하셨습니다. 십자가는 죽음이 끝이 아님을 증명하는 자리입니다. 그리고 그 자리에서 하나님은 스스로 돌이켜 살라 말씀하십니다.
여기서 회개에 대해 다시 생각하게 됩니다. 흔히 회개, 메타노이아를 '길을 가다 깨닫고 돌이킴'이라고 생각합니다. 중요한 시작입니다. 하지만 그것만으로는 부족합니다. 그렇게 단순한 길이라면 예수님을 따르는 길이 십자가 길이 되지 않을 것입니다.
회개는 단순히 돌이키는, 방향의 수정이 아닙니다. 회개는 "존재의 전복"입니다. 내가 발 딛고 서 있던 세계가 무너지고, 내 안에 들어 있던 질서와 기준이 철저히 해체되며, 그 자리에 전혀 다른 기준이 심겨지는 사건입니다. 이 회개가 하나님이 기뻐하시는 회개입니다.
“제가 죄를 짓지 않았습니다”는 말로는 부족합니다. 회개는 “이제 나는 내가 누구인지, 어떤 질서를 따라 어떻게 살아야 하는지를 압니다”라고 고백하는 일입니다. 그 고백은 새로운 땅 위에 설때만 터져나올 수 있습니다. 하나님이 기뻐하시는 회개는 새로운 세계에서 새로운 피조물로 살아가는 일인 것입니다.
회개는 우리를 하나님의 기쁨 속으로 다시 데려갑니다. 우리를 생명으로 다시 입히고 비로소 하나님 안에서 살아 있는 자로 살게 합니다. 오늘도 하나님께서 제발 돌이키라 애원하고 계십니다. 그 하나님의 바램에 제가 기쁨이 될 수 있기를, 새로운 세상을 허락하셔서 그 안에서 사는 기쁨을 누릴 수 있기를 또 그것으로 주님께 기쁨이 되기를 바랍니다.
Ezekiel 18:32 : For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!
God does not delight in the death of the dying. His heart is set more on life than on judgment, on restoration rather than destruction, on repentance rather than condemnation. The image of death leading only to more death, of life ending in nothingness, is not the face of God revealed in Scripture.
God has passed through death. The cross is the place that proves death is not the end. And from that place, He calls us to turn and live.
This leads me to reflect on repentance again. We often think of repentance, metanoia, as “realizing one’s error and turning back while on the road.” It is an important starting point, but it is not enough. If the path were that simple, following Jesus would not be called the way of the cross.
Repentance is not merely a change of direction. It is an overturning of existence, the collapse of the world you once stood upon, the complete dismantling of the order and standards that once ruled within you, and the planting of an entirely new standard in their place. This is the repentance God delights in.
It is not enough to say, “I have not sinned.” True repentance confesses, “Now I know who I am, what order I live by, and how I must live.” Such a confession can only be spoken when standing upon new ground. The repentance that pleases God is to live as a new creation in a new world.
Repentance brings us back into God’s joy. It clothes us again in life and makes us truly alive in Him. Even today, God pleads with us to turn. May I become His joy in answering that plea. May I enter the joy of living in the new world He grants and by living in it, bring joy to Him.
