창세기 31장 - 33장
창세기 31장부터 33장에 걸쳐 야곱이 장인 라반을 떠나 형 에서를 만나는 여정에 대한 이야기가 나옵니다. 이 이야기 속에서 우리는 야곱이라는 인물을 통해 인간적인 약점과 하나님의 은혜가 엮이는 모습을 보게 됩니다.
우리는 어린 시절 위인전을 읽을 때처럼, 성경 속 인물들을 절대선으로만 바라보는 습관이 있습니다. 특히 창세기의 인물들은 마치 슈퍼히어로처럼 느껴지곤 하지요. 하지만 야곱의 이야기는 이런 관점을 다시 생각하게 만듭니다.
라반을 떠나는 야곱은 자신의 재산과 노력에 대해 논리적으로 항변하며 부당한 대우에 맞섭니다. 그러나 형 에서를 만나러 가는 여정에서는 과거 자신의 잘못을 의식하며 선처를 구하고 이해를 부탁합니다. 이 두 장면은 야곱이 단지 사람이자 연약한 존재임을 잘 보여줍니다.
야곱은 장인의 불공정한 대우에는 당당히 자기주장을 펼치지만, 형 에서를 두 번이나 속인 사건 앞에서는 한없이 작아집니다. 이는 인간의 한계를 보여줍니다. 결국 우리는 죄에서 완전히 자유로울 수 없으며, 정의의 기준 역시 자신의 좁은 시각에 갇힐 수밖에 없음을 깨닫게 됩니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 하나님은 야곱을 선택하시고 그의 아들들을 통해 이스라엘 12지파를 시작하십니다. 이 선택은 야곱이 죄에서 자유롭기 때문이 아닙니다. 오히려 그의 결점 많은 인생에도 불구하고 하나님은 그를 통해 자신의 역사를 이루시겠다고 결정하신 것입니다.
나같은 죄인은 불러내시어 하나님의 역사 앞에 세워주신 주님의 은혜에 감사드립니다.
This story of Jacob, found in Genesis 31–33, tells of his journey as he leaves his father-in-law Laban and reconnects with his brother Esau. As we follow his path, we see how Jacob’s human flaws and God’s incredible grace work together to move His greater plan forward.
Often, when we read about great people, we tend to see them as flawless, almost like superheroes. The figures in Genesis, in particular, can feel larger than life. But Jacob’s story gently challenges that perception.
When Jacob parts ways with Laban, he raises his voice, standing firm to defend what he believes he’s owed. His approach is sharp and calculated, demanding what he feels is rightfully his. Yet, when it comes to Esau, the brother he deceived, Jacob adopts a starkly different tone, soft, almost pleading, as if hoping that a few humble words might erase the tension between them. The contrast is striking: when it’s about securing his own interests, he’s relentless and strategic, but when it comes to facing the consequences of his own actions, he seeks mercy with a humility that seems almost too convenient.
These contrasting moments in Jacob’s life reflect the limitations of being human. We are never fully free from our shortcomings, and our sense of justice is always shaped by our limited perspective.
And still, God chooses Jacob. Through him, the 12 tribes of Israel are born. God didn’t pick Jacob because he was perfect. He chose him in spite of his flaws, weaving His grand plan through Jacob’s life.
I’m deeply grateful for God’s grace, that He calls a sinner like me, and invites me into His incredible purpose.
