창세기 43장 14절
Sacrifice and Sorrow in the Cost of Love
전능하신 하나님께서 그 사람 앞에서 너희에게 은혜를 베풀어 주시기를 바랄 뿐이다. 그래서 그 사람이 시므온과 베냐민을 너희와 함께 다시 돌려 보내준다면, 더 이상 바랄 것이 없다. 내 걱정은 하지 말아라. 자식들을 잃게 된다면 잃어야지, 난들 어찌 하겠느냐
창세기 43장 14절에서 야곱은 “내가 자식을 잃어야 한다면 잃을 수밖에 없다”라며 사랑하는 아들 베냐민을 보냅니다. 이미 요셉을 잃었던 야곱에게 베냐민은 남은 전부이자 그의 삶에서 가장 소중한 존재였습니다. 요셉을 잃었던 사건이 예기치 못한 비극이었다면, 이번에는 스스로 내린 결단으로 인해 또다시 그 뼈를 깎는 듯한 고통을 마주해야 했습니다. 한 사람에게 두 번이나 찾아온 이와 같은 고통은 그저 운명이 아니라, 결단이 만들어낸 깊은 비극의 무게를 느끼게 합니다.
이 장면에서 우리는 하나님의 모습을 떠올리게 됩니다. 창세기에서 뱀으로 인해 아담을 잃으셨던 하나님께 그 고통은 우발적인 사건이었지만, 신약에서 예수 그리스도를 잃으신 사건은 하나님의 결단이었습니다. 야곱의 결단이 고통으로 가득 찼던 것처럼, 하나님의 마음에도 끓어오르는 아픔과 피맺힌 슬픔이 있었을 것입니다.
나 자신에게 가장 소중한 것을 내려놓아야 하는 결단 앞에서 자연스레 고개가 숙여집니다. 만약 야곱이 베냐민을 내어놓지 않았다면, 아브라함이 이삭을 제단에 올리지 않았다면, 그리고 하나님이 예수님을 내어놓지 않으셨다면, 십자가의 구원의 역사는 가능했을까 하는 생각이 듭니다.
오늘도 우리는 고통스러운 선택을 통해 구원의 역사를 이루시는 하나님의 섭리를 묵상합니다. 자신의 가장 귀한 것을 기꺼이 내어주신 하나님의 결단을 가슴 깊이 새기며, 그 결단을 본받아 작은 흉내라도 내어볼 수 있기를 소망해 봅니다.
I pray that God Almighty will help you. I pray that God will cause the man to be kind to you. Then he will let your older brother go free. He and Benjamin will return here with you. As for me, if I must lose my sons, then I will lose them. There is nothing that I can do to stop it.’
In Genesis 43:14, Jacob says, ‘If I must lose my children, I can only lose them,’ as he sends his beloved son Benjamin. After already losing Joseph, Benjamin was everything to him. Benjamin was his most precious remaining connection. The loss of Joseph had been such a sudden and painful shock, but now Jacob had to face even more pain because of a choice he made. This kind of heart-wrenching pain wasn’t just something that happened to him. It was something that came from a difficult decision he had to make.
This situation makes me think about God. In Genesis, the pain of losing Adam to the serpent wasn’t something God planned, but in the New Testament, the loss of Jesus was a decision God made. Just like Jacob’s decision was filled with deep pain, I can only imagine how much sorrow and heartache God must have felt. When we have to make the tough choice to give up something we love, it’s not easy.
But if Jacob had held onto Benjamin, if Abraham hadn’t been willing to offer Isaac, and if God hadn’t let Jesus go, would the salvation story have even been possible?
As we think about how God works through these painful decisions, we remember how much love and sacrifice were involved. When we face our own tough choices, we can try to remember God’s heart and follow His example by being willing to give what matters most.
