신명기 20장-25
A Light for the Journey
신명기는 기원 전에 이스라엘 민족을 위해 주신 계율입니다. 읽다보면 때로는 얼굴을 찌푸리게 되는 구절도 있고 고개를 갸우뚱하게 만드는 구절도 있지만 대체적으로 신명기는 읽기에 큰 저항감이 느껴지지 않습니다.
오히려 질서와 통찰이 담긴 고대의 법 체계를 읽는 일이 흥미롭게 느껴집니다. 몇천 년 전 선포된 이 이스라엘을 위한 규율들에 여전히 유효한 지점들이 많다는 사실은 다시 한 번 생각해 볼 신비입니다.
그 시절, 이스라엘에게 이 규율이 선포되던 순간을 떠올려 봅니다. 모든 것 위에 계신 하나님께서 공동체를 위해 법을 주셨습니다. 법이란 억압을 내재하고 있는데, 이 법의 목적은 억압이나 압제가 아닙니다. 이 법의 핵심은 주님을 경외하는 마음이며, 그 경외함에서 비롯된 것은 억압이 아니라 인간에 대한 공경과 정의였습니다. 주지하다시피, 이 법은 단순한 규율이 아니라, 인간과 공동체가 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하는 등불이었습니다. '혁명적'이라는 단어가 이 순간에 떠오르는 것이 이상하게 느껴지지 않을 정도입니다. 이스라엘에게 이상향은 먼 곳에 있지 않았습니다. 그 법 안에서 살아갈 때, 이미 그곳이 이상향이었던 것입니다.
하나님의 자녀로 사는 저에게는 소명이 있습니다. 첫째, 제 중심에 늘 주님이 계신지 살피는 것입니다. 사람은 중심을 잃기 쉽고, 주어진 질서 속에서도 자신의 길을 벗어나기 마련입니다. 그 두려움과 경외함으로 매일 아침을 맞이하고, 매일 밤을 마무리하는 것은, 단순한 신앙의 습관이 아니라 저 자신을 지탱하는 원리입니다. 둘째, 제 이웃과 공동체, 그리고 제가 속한 사회를 섬기며 따뜻한 예수님의 온기를 전하는 것입니다. 신앙이란 개인적인 깨달음에서 머물지 않고, 반드시 관계 속에서 빛을 발해야 한다는 것을 배웁니다.
주님, 시간의 저 앞까지 내다보시며 인간이 걸어야 할 길을 밝혀 주시는 하나님. 오늘도 주님의 말씀 안에서 주님을 제 중심에 모시고 살아가겠습니다. 흔들리는 마음을 다잡고, 저에게 맡겨진 자리를 돌보며 살아가겠습니다. 시간이 흐르고 세상이 변해도, 저의 근원이 누구이며 어디에 속해 있는지 잊지 않게 해주세요. 감사합니다, 주님. 아멘.
Deuteronomy is a set of commandments given to the people of Israel long before the birth of Christ. As I read through it, there are verses that make me pause. Some feel stern, others a bit puzzling. But overall, the book feels surprisingly approachable. There is something quietly engaging about reading an ancient legal code filled with order and insight.
What strikes me most is how many of these laws, proclaimed thousands of years ago, still carry meaning today. It is a mystery worth pondering. Words once spoken in the wilderness continue to speak into our lives now.
I try to picture the moment these words were first received. The God who is above all things gave His people a way to live together. Law often carries the weight of restriction, but this law had a different spirit. Its purpose was not control. At its core was a deep reverence for the Lord. And from that reverence came not fear, but dignity and justice. These laws were not merely commands. They were a vision. A direction. A light guiding people forward in how to live well in community. It is not strange that the word revolutionary comes to mind. For Israel, the promised land was not only a physical destination. It was also found in the way of life shaped by this law. When they lived in its spirit, the ideal was already among them.
As a child of God today, I am given a calling. First, to keep returning to the question of whether the Lord truly remains at the center of my heart. It is easy to drift, even within order. Beginning the day with awe and ending it in quiet trust is not just a habit. It is a way of staying grounded. Second, I am called to serve. To share the warmth of Christ with my neighbors, my community, and the world I belong to. Faith is never just a personal experience. It finds its fullness in relationship.
Lord, You who see the road before me and gently shine Your light upon it. Today I will walk in Your word. I will keep You at the center of all I do. I will care for the place You have entrusted to me. As time moves forward and the world continues to change, help me never forget where I come from and to whom I belong. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
