Choosing Hope Like Moses
신명기 15장 5절 : 하나님께 순종하고 내가 오늘날 명한 이 모든 규정들을 잘 지키면
모세는 지난 사십 년 동안 부모 세대 이스라엘을 온몸으로 겪었습니다. 그들이 얼마나 완고하게 하나님께 불순종했는지, 얼마나 반복적으로 고집을 부렸는지를 누구보다도 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그런 그가 지금 다음 세대 앞에 서서 한때 부모 세대에게 전했던 그 말을 다시 꺼내고 있습니다.
인간이 쉽게 변하지 않는다는 것을 사십 년 동안 목격한 모세입니다. 가나안을 목전에 두고 들어가지 못하게 된 모세입니다. 그런데도 그는 다시금 같은 당부를 반복하며, 여전히 희망을 이야기하고 있습니다.
어떻게 모세는 이런 상황에서도 희망을 이야기할 수 있었을까요?
광야 사십 년의 세월 동안, 이스라엘은 수없이 하나님을 저버렸습니다. 그러나 그 모든 순간에도 하나님은 여전히 그들을 통해 역사를 이끌어 가셨습니다. 모세는 이를 지켜보며 하나님의 성품을 깊이 배웠을 것입니다. 하나님은 실망하시면서도 포기하지 않으셨고, 절망할 수밖에 없는 순간에도 다시 길을 내셨습니다. 그렇게 모세는 하나님의 인내와 신실하심 속에서, 희망이란 단순한 감정이 아니라 하나님께서 사람을 대하는 방식이며, 의지적인 선택임을 깨달아 갔을 것입니다.
모세가 마지막으로 감당해야 하는 사명은 하나님께서 이스라엘을 희망하며 끝까지 신뢰하셨듯이 그 역시도 그들을 희망하고 신뢰하는 것이었습니다. 하나님과 함께한 긴 세월 동안, 모세는 그렇게 하나님의 성품을 닮은 하나님의 사람으로 성화되어 갔습니다.
우리 삶에도 힘든 일이 참 많습니다. 하지만 어떤 좌절 속에서도 희망하기를, 그리고 희망을 선택하기를 바랍니다. 천 번이고 만 번이고 같은 말을 반복해야 할지라도, 좌절의 끝에는 다시 피어나는 희망이 있기를, 그리고 그렇게 살아내기를 기도합니다. 하나님께서 포기하지 않으셨으니, 우리도 포기하지 않기를 바랍니다. 결국 하나님의 성품이 우리에게서도 드러나기를, 하나님께서 보여주신 삶을 우리도 살아가기를 희망합니다.
Deuteronomy 15:5 “If only you fully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today...”
Moses had lived through forty long years with the generation of Israelites who came out of Egypt. He saw firsthand how stubborn and disobedient they were toward God and how often they resisted, doubted, and turned away. And yet now, standing before a new generation, Moses repeats the same words he once spoke to their parents.
He knew how hard it is for people to change. He himself would not enter the Promised Land. But still, he chose to hope. Still, he spoke again, urging the people to obey, to trust, and to walk with God.
Why?
Why was Moses able to speak with hope even after all the heartbreak?
Because in those forty years in the wilderness, while Israel kept turning away, God never gave up. Even when they failed Him, God kept leading. Even when it seemed hopeless, God made a way.
Moses watched and learned. He came to know the heart of God. A heart that is patient. A heart that does not give up. A heart that chooses hope again and again, not as a feeling, but as a choice. Moses came to understand: hope is how God deals with us.
And so, in his final calling, Moses mirrors the very heart of God. Just as God never stopped believing in His people, Moses chooses to believe in them too. Over time, Moses had become a man shaped by God’s own character.
Life is hard sometimes. You already know that. But I pray you choose hope even when it’s hard. I pray you say the same gentle words a thousand times if you have to. I pray you live in a way that says: “I will not give up.”
Because God hasn’t given up on you.
So let’s not give up either.
Let’s live the way He has shown us with patience, with trust, and always, with hope.
