From the Root, Life Again
이사야 11장 1절 : 이새의 줄기에서 한 싹이 나며, 그 뿌리에서 한 가지가 나서 결실할 것이요
식물을 키우다 보면 생명의 신비를 자주 마주합니다. 얼마 전 마당에서 기르던 제라늄을 짧게 잘라냈는데 며칠 뒤 무심코 마당을 걷다 보니 잘린 줄기에서 새순이 자라고 있었습니다. 줄기는 이미 없었지만 땅속에 남아 있던 뿌리는 여전히 살아 있었고 그 뿌리는 조용히 새로운 생명을 일으키고 있었습니다.
삶 속에서 우리가 절망에 빠지는 까닭은 눈앞에 펼쳐진 단절과 상실의 순간을 곧 끝이라 여기기 때문입니다. 내일이 보이지 않고 다시 시작할 힘도 감히 기대할 수 없을 때 우리는 주저앉게 됩니다. 하지만 오늘 말씀은 뿌리가 살아 있는 한 생명은 반드시 다시 시작된다고 선언합니다. 그루터기만 덩그러니 남은 그 자리에서조차 하나님은 새 질서를 여는 싹을 틔우십니다.
하나님 안에서 인간은 단지 끝을 향해 가는 존재가 아니라 새로 시작할 수 있는 가능성을 가진 존재입니다. 이런 인간존재에 대한 희망은 인간의 가능성에서 나오는 것이 아니라 하나님의 기억 속에 보존된 언약에서 출발합니다. 이사야의 예언도 바로 그 점은 확인해 주고 있는 것입니다. 하나님은 역사의 파괴 이후에도 뿌리를 기억하시고 거기에서 다시 시작하십니다.
우리의 삶도 어딘가에서는 잘려나가 있고 어딘가에서는 폐허가 되어 있습니다. 하지만 그 자리에서도 주님을 뿌리 삼아 살아가는 사람에게는 다시 시작될 생명이 약속되어 있습니다. 튼튼한 뿌리 위에 언젠가 터져나올 싹의 시작을 믿는 것이 오늘 우리가 믿고 견뎌야 할 희망이라고 생각합니다.
우리는 드러나는 것들을 보고 흔들립니다. 눈에 보이는 성공과 실패, 건강과 약함, 관계의 결실과 단절이 우리의 기쁨과 슬픔을 좌우합니다. 하지만 하나님은 그 모든 겉모습 아래에서 보이지 않는 뿌리를 통해 우리를 지탱하고 계십니다. 잘려나간 그 자리, 아무것도 자라지 않을 것 같은 황폐한 자리에서, 하나님은 반드시 다시 시작하십니다. 회복시키시고, 새롭게 하십니다.
하나님께서 우리의 뿌리 되심을 믿으며 오늘도 그 뿌리로부터 싹트는 조용한 희망과 함께 걸어가는 하루가 되기를 바랍니다.
Isaiah 11:1 says, “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.”
When we care for plants, we often witness the quiet mystery of life. Not long ago, I cut back a geranium growing in my yard. A few days later, while walking outside, I noticed a tiny new shoot sprouting from what had been a bare stem. The visible stalk was gone, but the root hidden beneath the soil was still alive, quietly giving rise to new life.
In life, we fall into despair when we assume that loss or rupture is the end of the story. When we can’t see tomorrow, when the idea of beginning again feels beyond reach, we are tempted to stop where we are. But today’s verse declares this truth: as long as the root is alive, life will begin again. Even from a bare stump, God brings forth a new shoot to open a new order.
In God, human life is not simply a path toward its end. It carries within it the possibility of new beginnings. This hope does not come from human potential, but from the covenant God remembers and preserves within His heart. Isaiah’s prophecy confirms this: God remembers the root, even after history has collapsed, and from there, He begins again.
In many ways, our own lives bear the marks of loss, of things cut off and left in ruins. Yet for those who remain rooted in the Lord, life is not over. There is a promise of renewal. Believing in the shoot that will one day break through from the strength of that root, that is the hope we are called to hold and endure with today.
We are often swayed by what we see: success or failure, health or frailty, connection or separation. These visible things seem to define our joy or sorrow. But beneath all of it, God sustains us with roots unseen. In the very places where everything seems cut off or desolate, God begins again. He restores. He makes all things new.
May we live this day believing that God is our root. And may we walk with quiet hope, trusting in the shoot that grows, not always visibly, but always faithfully, from that deep and living root.
