이사야서 25장 9절 : 그 날에 말하기를 이는 우리의 하나님이시라, 우리가 그를 기다렸으니 그가 우리를 구원하시리로다. 이는 여호와시라, 우리가 그를 기다렸으니 우리는 그의 구원을 기뻐하며 즐거워하리라 할 것이며
이사야의 예언이 선포된 시대는 이스라엘에게 매우 암울한 시기였습니다. 외세의 침입, 나라의 멸망, 종교적 혼란 속에서 백성들은 칠흑같은 어둠의 시간을 걸어야 했습니다.
우리 역시 살다 보면 예고 없이 찾아오는 고통 속에서 삶이 크게 흔들리고 때로는 완전히 무너지는 것같은 절망 속에 서는 경험을 하게 됩니다. 그때 하나님은 멀게만 느껴지고 끊임없는 기도 속에서도 침묵하시는 하나님을 마주하며 낙심하게 됩니다.
인간은 고통을 통해 자신을 직면하게 됩니다. 안타깝게도 평온하고 안락한 삶 속에서는 자신을 성찰하거나 돌보는 일이 쉽지 않습니다. 오히려 불확실성과 아픔 앞에 섰을 때에야 비로소 ‘나는 누구인가’, ‘나는 어디로 가고 있는가’라는 본질적인 질문을 하게 됩니다. 놀라운 점은 성경은 이 질문의 끝에서 ‘하나님이 누구신가’를 묻게 하며 결국 ‘하나님이 나의 주 되심’을 고백하는 자리로 우리를 이끈다는 것입니다.
오늘 이사야서의 말씀은 '그 날이 오면 이는 우리의 하나님이라'라 고백하게 된다고 합니다. 즉, 구원이란 단지 고통이 끝나는 사건이 아니라 삶의 모든 고난과 기다림이 하나님을 향해 다시 해석되는 순간이라는 점을 말하고 있는 것입니다. 하나님이 나의 주 되심을 고백하는 그 순간 우리는 비로소 고통의 유무와 차원을 달리하는 우리 존재의 자리를 찾고 삶의 방향을 얻으며 의미를 발견하게 된다는 말입니다.
이 고백은 인간의 고통과 존재의 불안을 껴안고도 꺾이지 않는 희망의 언어입니다. 어둠을 뚫고 다다른 빛이며 무너진 자리에서 다시 살아나는 숨입니다. 그리고 '우리의 하나님이라'라는 이 고백이야말로 세상 어디에서도 찾을 수 없는 기독교인의 가장 깊고 진한 기쁨이 됩니다.
Isaiah 25:9 : “On that day they will say, ‘Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.’”
The prophetic words of Isaiah came during one of the darkest periods in Israel’s history. Foreign invasion, national collapse, and spiritual confusion left the people walking through a shadowed valley with no clear end in sight.
We, too, find ourselves at times caught in pain that arrives without warning, sorrow that shakes our foundations and leaves us standing in the rubble of all we thought secure. In those moments, God can feel unbearably distant. We pray and pray, but the silence only deepens.
Yet it is often through suffering that we come face to face with ourselves. Comfort rarely leads us to deep reflection. But when the ground beneath us gives way, we begin to ask: Who am I? Where am I going? And the surprising thing is, Scripture never leaves us in those questions alone. It gently, yet unmistakably, turns our gaze outward and upward until we begin to ask, Who is God? And in that search, we arrive at the most profound confession: He is the Lord, and He is my God.
Isaiah says that on that day, we will declare, “This is our God.” Not because our pain has vanished, but because our pain has found its meaning. Salvation is not merely the end of suffering, but the moment our waiting, our longing, our entire story is reinterpreted in the light of God’s presence.
To say “He is our God” is to find a footing that no loss can shake. It is to receive a direction and meaning that transcends whether life feels bright or broken. It is the language of hope that refuses to be crushed. The light that breaks through the darkest hour. The breath that rises again from the ruins.
And in this confession, in this joy that comes not from having all the answers, but from knowing whose we are, Christian faith finds its truest voice. There is nothing else in this world quite like it.
