When the Scroll Is Sealed
이사야 29장 11-12 : 이 모든 환상이 너희에게는 단단히 봉인된 두루마리 책과 똑같다. 그러므로 만일 너희가 글을 읽을 줄 아는 사람에게 이 두루마리 책을 넘겨주면서 그 글을 읽어 보라고 부탁하면, 그는 대답하기를 “이 책은 단단히 봉인되어 있어서 내가 읽을 수가 없다.” 할 것이다. 또 너희가 글을 읽을 줄 모르는 사람에게 이 두루마리 책을 넘겨주면서 한번 읽어 보라고 말하면, 그는 대답하기를 “나는 글을 읽을 줄 모른다.” 할 것이다.
이사야의 시대. 하나님은 끊임없이 이스라엘을 향해 돌아오라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 역사의 흐름은 하나님의 경고와 권면을 외면한 채 멸망을 향해 치닫고 있었습니다. 하나님의 개시는 선포되었고 말씀이 주어졌지만 정작 사람들의 마음에는 가닿지 않았습니다.
하나님의 개시와 말씀은 단순한 정보나 문장이 아닙니다. 말씀은 나를 꿰뚫고 들어오는 빛이며 존재를 흔드는 진리입니다. 하지만 마음이 닫혀있을 때 그 빛은 눈이 부셔 불편하고 그 진리는 짐처럼 무겁게 느껴집니다.
진리가 버겁게 느껴지는 이유는 진리가 삶의 변화를 요구하기 때문입니다. 마음 깊은 곳에서 우리는 그 변화를 피하고 싶어 합니다. 그래서 어떤 이들은 "책이 봉해졌다"며 이성적으로 진리에 다가가기를 거부하고 또 어떤 이들은 "나는 글을 읽을 수 없다"며 무력함으로 회피합니다. 방식은 달라도 이 두 경우의 본질을 같습니다. 진리를 마주하지 않으려는 저항의 마음입니다.
하나님의 진리 앞에 나아가는 길은 지식이 아닌 겸손을 통하는 길이며, 나의 능력이 아니라 순종의 마음에 기대어 걷는 길입니다. 또 닫힌 책을 다시 펼 수 있는 열쇠 역시 지식이나 능력이 아닌 하나님을 향한 믿음과 주님의 향한 갈망에 있습니다.
오늘도 우리를 부르시고 말씀으로 진리의 빛을 비추어 주시는 주님 앞에 열린 마음으로 서기를 소망합니다. 그 진리 앞에 순종의 마음으로 머물수 있기를, 또 그 사랑 앞에 변화를 두려워하지 않는 담대함을 가질 수 있기를 하나님께 기도드립니다.
Isaiah 29:11–12 : This whole vision is to you like the words of a scroll that is sealed. If you give it to someone who can read and say, “Please read this,” they will answer, “I cannot, it is sealed.” If you give it to someone who cannot read and say, “Please read this,” they will answer, “I do not know how to read.”
In the days of Isaiah, God continually called Israel to return to Him. Yet the current of history flowed steadily toward ruin, as the people turned a deaf ear to His warnings and gentle pleadings. Revelation had been spoken, the Word had been given, but it never reached the hearts it was meant for.
The Word of God is not simply information or ink on a page. It is light that pierces us, truth that unsettles us to the core. But when the heart is closed, that light feels blinding and intrusive, and that truth becomes a burden too heavy to carry.
Truth feels burdensome because it calls for change. Deep down, we resist that call. Some hide behind intellect, saying, “The scroll is sealed,” as if logic can shield them from truth. Others shrink back in helplessness, saying, “I do not know how to read.” Though their approaches differ, both responses spring from the same place, a resistance to face the truth.
The path to God’s truth is not one of superior knowledge, but of humility. It is not a journey powered by our own strength, but one walked in quiet obedience. The key to unsealing the scroll is not found in intellect or effort, but in faith that longs for God and a heart that desires His voice.
Even today, God calls to us and shines the light of His truth through His Word. May we come before Him with open hearts. I pray we remain in His truth with a spirit of surrender, and that we would not fear the transformation His love invites, but welcome it with courage.
