The power of not yet
The power of yet.
‘아직’의 힘.
I heard about a high school in Chicago where students had to pass a certain number of courses to graduate,
저는 시카고에 있는 한 고등학교에 대해 들었습니다. 그곳에서는 졸업을 위해 일정 과목을 이수해야 했습니다.
and if they didn't pass a course, they got the grade "Not Yet."
그런데 과목을 통과하지 못하면 ‘아직(Not Yet)’이라는 성적을 받았습니다.
And I thought that was fantastic,
저는 그것이 정말 훌륭하다고 생각했습니다.
because if you get a failing grade, you think, I'm nothing, I'm nowhere.
왜냐하면 낙제를 하면, 사람들은 ‘나는 아무것도 아니야, 아무 데도 못 가’라고 생각하기 때문입니다.
But if you get the grade "Not Yet", you understand that you're on a learning curve.
하지만 ‘아직’이라는 성적을 받는다면, 자신이 배움의 과정에 있다는 것을 이해하게 됩니다.
It gives you a path into the future.
그건 미래로 나아가는 길을 열어줍니다.
"Not Yet" also gave me insight into a critical event early in my career, a real turning point.
‘아직’이라는 개념은 제 경력 초기의 중요한 사건, 즉 진정한 전환점을 이해하는 데 도움을 주었습니다.
I wanted to see how children coped with challenge and difficulty,
저는 아이들이 도전과 어려움을 어떻게 극복하는지를 보고 싶었습니다.
so I gave 10-year-olds problems that were slightly too hard for them.
그래서 저는 10살 아이들에게 약간 어려운 문제들을 제시했습니다.
Some of them reacted in a shockingly positive way.
그 중 몇몇은 놀랍도록 긍정적으로 반응했습니다.
They said things like, "I love a challenge," or, "You know, I was hoping this would be informative."
그들은 “저는 도전이 좋아요” 또는 “이게 유익할 거라 기대했어요” 같은 말을 했습니다.
They understood that their abilities could be developed.
그 아이들은 자신의 능력이 발전할 수 있다는 것을 이해하고 있었습니다.
They had what I call a growth mindset.
그들에게는 제가 ‘성장형 사고방식(growth mindset)’이라 부르는 것이 있었습니다.

challenge – 도전 (어려운 과제라는 뉘앙스 포함)
difficulty – 어려움
react – 반응하다
informative – 유익한, 정보를 주는
develop – 발전시키다, 개발하다
ability – 능력
growth mindset – 성장형 사고방식
engage in – ~에 관여하다, 몰두하다
