이번에 읽은 책: 앙투안 드 생텍쥐페리 <어린 왕자>
All grown-ups were once children… but only few of them remember it.

“Where are the people?” resumed the little prince at last. “It’s a little lonely in the desert…”
“It is lonely when you’re among people, too,” said the snake.”
어린 시절 동화책으로 읽은 사람도 있을 테고 어른이 되어 처음 접한 사람도, 혹은 저처럼 여러 시기에 걸쳐 반복해 읽은 사람도 있을 듯합니다.
나이에 상관없이 누구에게나 감동을 줄만한 작품이지만 어른이 되어 다시 읽을 때 가장 가슴에 와닿을 내용이 아닐까 생각합니다.
어른의 세계는 참 이상하기도 하죠. 자신도 한때는 아이 시절을 겪어놓고, 아이가 하는 말이나 행동을 이해하려 들지 않고 자신이 하고 싶은 말만 하니까요.
아래 질문과 함께 책의 내용을 파악해 볼까 합니다.

주인공 어린 왕자는 천진난만한 아이의 모습을 보이면서 때로는 어른다운 행동과 말을 합니다. 이야기 속 어느 부분에서 아이의 모습으로 또 어느 부분에서 어른의 모습을 띠는지 생각이 드나요? 왜 그렇게 대조적인 모습을 보일까요?
The prince asks the aviator (narrator of the story) to draw a sheep for him. He disapproves one drawing after another despite the narrator's efforts.
In the end he settles for a drawing with a box in it. A sheep is inside the box. Or, the narrator explains so.
This is a typical behaviour of a child whose interest is in what he wants now. Also, no matter how weird the explanation behind the drawing is, the prince believes it as children do.
He doesn’t seem to grow old or is yet to grow up. Also living alone for a long time might have made his mind unadulterated.
Meanwhile, throughout the story, the prince acts and speaks like an adult too.
He has been living on his planet alone and takes care of his surroundings by himself, all of which are very harsh conditions for one person, let alone for a little boy. Therefore, despite the appearance of a mere boy, he has an attitude that is required for grown-ups.
It seems to me that the aviator and the prince are the same, I mean the author himself. The prince as his child version and the aviator as his adult version. That was his job, too.
사막 한가운데 갑자기 나타나 대뜸 양을 그려달라 하지 않나...
열심히 그려줬건만 마음에 안 든다고 다시 그려달라 하고...
상자만 덜렁 그려줬더니 그제야 만족하고...
모두 아이다운 행동이죠.
반면, 소행성에서 혼자 살아가며 장미의 까다로운 요구를 들어주고 바오밥 나무가 웃자라 땅 전체를 덮어버리지 않을까, 또 화산이 폭발하지 않을까 감시하는 등 어른이라도 혼자 하기에는 벅찬 일들의 연속을 어린 왕자는 해냅니다.
그래서, 이야기 속 주인공은 아이면서 어른의 모습을 띠고 있습니다. 어쩌면, 이야기 속 화자와 왕자가 동일 인물을 상징하는 것이 아닐까 또 작가 본인이 아닐까 생각이 들더군요. 생텍쥐페리가 비행사였던 점을 고려해 보면 말이죠.

어린 왕자가 지구에 오기 전 도달했던 여섯 개의 소행성을 떠올려 보세요. 이곳에서 만난 사람에 대한 질문입니다. 어떤 사람을 만났으며, 또 이들에게서 느낀 점은 무엇인지요?
The people the prince meets during his travel to the six planets may represent the typical grown-ups who are self-centred and weird in the eyes of children. Even in the eyes of grown-ups, these people may seem weird. But even grown-ups cannot do anything about it as they know becoming adults is to accept the harsh realities of weird life. Here is what the little prince says in the book, “Grown-ups are decidedly very, very odd”
The six people are as follows:
On the first planet the prince visits, he meets a king who forces everyone he encounters to become his subject and gives impossible orders.
The second planet, there is a conceited man who wants nothing but a praise for him.
The third person he meets is a drinker who claims to drink to forget the shame of his drinking.
On the fourth planet lives a businessman who does nothing but counting the stars up in the sky and claiming he owns them all.
The fifth person the prince meets is a lamplighter who repeats the tasks of lighting and extinguishing the lamp every minute. His planet is so small and turns very fast, so the day on it lasts only a minute.
In the last planet the prince meets an old geographer who has never travelled around and seen any of the things he keeps for his job.
From this geographer, the prince is advised to visit the planet Earth for his next destination.
어린 왕자가 지구에 오기 전, 여섯 개의 소행성을 방문하면서 여섯 명의 어른을 만나지요. 그러다 마지막에 만난 지리학자로부터 지구에 관한 이야기를 듣습니다. 이 과정에서 "어른은 정말 괴상하다"라고 말할 정도로 이해할 수 없는 어른의 세계를 알게 됩니다.
Did you know that the author drew all the illustrations of <The Little Prince> himself?
Saint-Exupéry drew all of 'Le Petit Prince'’s illustrations himself. He spent just over a year studying architecture, but didn’t consider himself an artist, although he was known to always be sketching figures on scraps of paper.
Saint-Exupéry was reported to have been drawing versions of the title character in the margins of manuscripts and letters for some time ahead of the publication. He did have to improvise on models for some of the characters as he didn’t have access to a sheep or a tiger. Instead, his own pet boxer was the basis of the tiger and his friend’s poodle was transformed into the illustrated sheep.

<어린 왕자> 초판에 실린 삽화를 저자가 직접 그렸다는 사실을 알고 있나요?
이런 이야기를 듣고, 작가가 직접 그린 삽화가 실린 책을 찾느라 저도 조금 시간을 들이긴 했습니다.
코끼리를 삼킨 보아뱀의 그림을, 즉 어른은 모자라 치부하던 바로 그 그림을, 그리던 일도 저자 자신의 경험이요, 어린 왕자도 비행사도 저자가 아닐까 여겨지더군요.
