MoMA ©️한서율사랑하는 MoMA 뉴욕현대미술관은 가장 자주 방문하는 미술관인 것 같습니다. 실시간뉴욕 Live 연재북에서도 소개드린 적이 있는데 현재는 알렉스 카츠의 Seasons 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울 4가지 작품이 전시되어 있습니다.
사계절하면 어떤 감정이 드세요?
각 계절은 저마다의 아름다움을 뽐내며 멋진 아우라를 뽐내는 느낌입니다.
저는 MoMA의 한가운데 벤치에 앉아 그림들을 감상했습니다. 한 작품, 한 작품 시선을 옮길 때마다 봄에는 파릇파릇한 새싹 돋는 소리가, 여름의 초록숲의 바람결이 가을의 무르익음이 겨울의 단조로움을 느꼈습니다.
한국의 여러 미술전시전도 많이 다녀오지만 뉴욕의 모마 미술관은 작품과 작품 사이의 간격이 넓고 한 층을 통째로 넓게 활용하는 공간 구성이 가장 마음에 들었습니다.
봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울을 모두 사랑하며 행복한 뉴욕이야기는 계속됩니다.
Alex Katz: Seasons
The four monumental paintings featured in this installation chronicle the changing of the seasons, from the vibrant colors of spring, summer, and fall to the stark palette of winter. Paintings of trees have figured prominently in Alex Katz's work from the outset of his career; he first developed an interest in landscapes while studying at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Maine, in 1949-50. The works on display here belong to a new series of more than one hundred paintings Katz created in his New York studio beginning in 2022.
Katz draws inspiration from his immediate surroundings, whether a lone tree encountered on Houston Street on his way home from the cinema or the lush landscape of Maine, where the artist has spent his summers since 1954. In many instances, he omits the horizon lines that are typical of traditional landscape painting-a decision that, when paired with the large scale of his works, produces the illusion of environments with no clear beginning or end. The sensation of color is what I wanted," says Katz. "It's the sensation of seeing."
Alex Katz: Seasons celebrates the artist's ever-evolving approach to interpreting the natural world. These days, he often begins with photographs shot on his phone or small painted sketches, which he subsequently transforms into large-scale compositions.
Working intuitively, he paints at a high speed and frequently completes an entire painting within a single morning. He cheerfully describes this all-or-nothing process as "Hold your breath and hope for the best."
