오늘은 Facebook 의 Humans of New York 을 만든 사람의 이야기를 번역하여 올립니다. 뉴욕시에 대해 저 또한 이 사람과 같은 생각이었음을 알려드리고 싶구요 (2010년쯤까지는 그랬습니다).

지난 6개월 동안 저는 한 가지 비밀을 간직해 왔습니다. 하지만 그 비밀을 밝히기 전에, 먼저 배경 설명을 드리지요. 15년 전 저는 '뉴욕의 사람들 (Humans of New York)'을 시작하기 위해 뉴욕으로 이사했습니다. 이 도시는 한 사람이 바랄 수 있는 가장 축복받은 삶을 저에게 선사해 주었지요. 그리고 제가 '이 도시'라고 말할 때, 제가 의미하는 것은 단 하나입니다. 바로 이 도시의 사람들이지요. 저에게 뉴욕은 항상 사람들이었습니다. 많은 분들이 내일 제 새 책 <사랑하는 뉴욕에게>가 출간된다는 사실을 알고 계실 겁니다. 이 책은 제가 이 도시에 보내는 사랑의 편지이며, 지금까지 제가 만든 작품 중 가장 자랑스러웠습니다—지금까지는요.
제 비밀을 알여드릴께요: 이 책은 훨씬 더 거대한 예술 작품을 위한 인스피레이션입니다. 앞으로 2주간 Grand Central Station 은 112년 역사상 가장 큰 변신을 겪을 것임이, 이곳이 뉴욕 시민들을 위한 생생하고 숨 쉬는 축제의 장으로 탈바꿈하는 순간을 맞이하게 될 것이기 때문이지요. 건물 내 모든 광고는 제거되고 'Humans of New York'에서 가져온 초상화와 이야기로 대체되었습니다. 하지만 여기서 끝나지 않습니다. Grand Central Station 은 한 사람이 감당하기엔 너무나 거대한 캔버스였기에, 1000명이 넘는 예술가들이 이 비전에 동참했지요. 협력자들 중에는 명성이 높은 이들도 있지만, 역 내 밴더빌트 홀에 사진 작품을 전시할 600명의 학생들보다 중요한 사람은 아무도 없겠지요.
저의 첫 책은 한 번의 포스팅으로 설명하기엔 너무나 방대합니다. Grand Central Station 역 전체를 다루게 될 텐데, 지하철 역의 세 층 모두 포함됩니다. 앞으로 2주 동안 제 협력자들과 그들의 기여에 대해 더 자세히 알려드리겠습니다. 하지만 지금 당장 말씀드릴 수 있는 것은 이 작품이 제가 함께 일해본 최고의 인재들이 정성껏 꼼꼼하게 제작했다는 점입니다. 그리고 매일 Grand Central Station 을 오가는 75만 명의 사람들에게 조금이라도 기쁨, 위안, 아름다움, 또는 유대감을 선사한다면—우리는 목표를 달성한 것이겠지요.”
“For the last six months I’ve been closely guarding a secret. But before I share it, a little context: fifteen years ago I moved to New York to begin Humans of New York. This city has provided me with the most blessed life any one person can ask for. And when I say ‘this city,’ I mean one thing: it’s people. For me, New York has always been the people. Many of you know that tomorrow my next book Dear New York will be released. It is my love letter to the city, and I’ve never been prouder of a work I’ve created—until now.
Because here is my secret: the book is the inspiration for a much larger piece of art. For the next two weeks Grand Central Station will undergo the biggest transformation in its 112-year history, as it becomes a living, breathing celebration of the people of New York. All advertising has been removed from the building and replaced with portraits and stories from Humans of New York. But it doesn’t stop there. Grand Central was far too large a canvas for one person, so more than 1000 artists have joined me to contribute to this vision. Some of my collaborators have big reputations, but none of us are more important than the 600 school children who will exhibit their photography in Vanderbilt Hall.
Dear New York is far too large to describe in one post; it will cover all of Grand Central, including all three levels of the subway station. I’ll be telling you much more about my collaborators and their contributions over these next two weeks. But for now I can tell you this: it was lovingly and carefully made, by some of the greatest people I’ve ever worked with. And if it provides even the slightest amount of joy, solace, beauty, or connection to the 750,000 people who pass through Grand Central every day—we have achieved our goal.”
