"Message in a Bottle (1999)"

내가 좋아하는 영화들

1999년작 "Message in a Bottle" 은 North Carolina의 어느 한 작은 항구도시에서 일어나는 일을 그린 영화입니다. Kevin Costner 와 Robin Wright, 그리고 Paul Newman 이 참 아름다운 그림을 그려냈지요. 이미 세상을 떠나신 Paul Newman 의 진가는 영화 전반부와 중반에는 의아할 정도로 존재하지 않지만, 후반부에 이르러서는 그가 왜 cast 되었는지 보게 됩니다. 그가 나이가 들어 출연한 영화들을 보면 그 있기에 참 감사한 작품이 꽤 많습니다.

이 이야기의 배경은 배, 바다, 그리고 항구입니다. Romantic Drama 에 속하는 영화이지만 그보다는 더 큰 주제인 바다가 어쩌면 흔한 로맨스 영화로 취급받았을지도 모를 이 영화를 그보다는 더 높은 수준의 영화로 만든 듯합니다.

영화의 중반에 귀에 익숙한 한 가수의 노래가 나오더군요. Beth Nielsen Chapman 의 "I will know your love" 라는 노래였습니다. 제가 꽤 좋아하는 가수로, 이 분의 노래를 듣고 있으면 New York 의 Long Island 에 위치한 Port Washington 이라는 항구도시가 떠오릅니다. 상당히 아름다운 타운이지요.

Port Washington 은 전형적인 미국 타운이지요. 이름들도 상상을 자극하는 크고 작은 도시들 또한 주변에 많습니다. 이 도시가 위치한 Long Island 의 북쪽으로는 Long Island Sound 라는, 대서양의 물줄기가 내륙과 이 섬을 양쪽에 두고 깊숙이 들어와 있는, 절대로 그 규모에서 적지 않은 bay 가 위치합니다.

이 마을을 관통하는 Norther Blvd (25A) 를 차를 타고 동쪽으로 지날 때면, 뒤로 하고 온 New York City 의 혼잡함과 어수선함은 자취를 감추고, "This is living!" 이라는 감탄사가 나올 정도로 아름다운 이 작은 마을의 풍경이 펼쳐지지요. 자주 들렀던 동네지만, 갈 때마다 Beth Nielsen Chapman 의 노래들, 특히 "Years" 라는 노래를 떠올리게 됩니다:

Going back was something after all these years

I drove down Monterey Street

When I turned left on Laurel and the house appeared

반대로 이 Long Island 의 반대쪽인 남쪽으로 가면 Fire Island 라는, 주 섬인 Long Island 의 아래쪽에 길고 평행하게 위치한 섬에 다다르게 됩니다.

Long Island 의 북쪽에서와는 달리, 이 남쪽에서는 대서양을 직접 바라볼 수 있게 되는데, 북쪽에 위치한 깔끔하고 다채로우며 소득이 높은 사람들이 사는 항구도시들과는 달리 이쪽의 크고 작은 도시들은 전형적인 fishing (+ summer tourism) for living 의 형태를 띠고 있습니다. 마치 Billy Joel 의 Downeaster Alexa 에 등장하는 fishermen 들을 쉽게 볼 수 있을듯한 지역이지요. 이 지역에 오면 Carly Simon 의 노래들 중 하나인 "Never Been Gone" 이 떠오릅니다:
