What I admire my late Chinese master’s genius is because he somehow brought the Buddhism from China to US, didn’t speak that much English. And yet somehow he managed to create a whole Sangha and transmit and trained many many excellent disciples.
내가 나의 돌아가신 중국인 스승님의 천재적임을 우러르는 게 뭐냐면, 어떻게 해서 중국에서 미국으로 불교를 가져오셨기 때문입니다. 그는 영어를 그닥 하지 못하시지만 어떻게 해서 승가 전체를 만들어내셨고 아주 많은 훌륭한 제자들을 전수하고 훈련해내셨기 때문입니다.
You know his first disciples were like drug addicts, rumor has it. Even they were homeless. So they needed to food to eat and they needed a shelter over their heads so they became monks. They didn’t last very long. (laugh) They didn’t last very long.
여러분, 그의 처음 제자들은 마약 중독자란 소문이 있습니다. 노숙자들이었다고도 합니다. 그래서 먹을 음식과 머릴 덮어줄 거처가 필요해서 출가자가 됐습니다. 그들은 오래 가지 못했습니다. (웃음) 그들은 오래 가지 못했습니다.
But they were the first members of his Sangha. Over time, more and more people came, and the weaker ones dropped out. Same things happened to me, happened to them. Meaning they weren’t really meant to stay there anyway. So they weren’t interested in planting blessings in the system.

So Buddhism is very very very logical. You plant the seeds then you read the benefit. You plant the tree then you get to enjoy flowers and the fruits, alright? So anyway after I left I realized that the other systems will be much better off financially.
그래서 불교는 매우 매우 논리적입니다. 씨앗을 심으면 여러분이 그 이익을 봅니다. 나무를 심으면 꽃과 열매를 즐깁니다. 알겠습니까? 그래서 내가 떠난 후, 난 다른 체제에서는 경제적으로 훨씬 윤택하단 걸 알게 되었습니다.
I went to another temple in Taiwan where I was wine and dine but the abbot he said you know I like you to go for ph.D. I will pay for everything. And look at my assets. I’m worth about 20 million dollars. And I look at his disciples, my god I’d be number 1 in no time.
대만 다른 절에 갔습니다. 거기서 난 잘 대접받았습니다. 거기 주지스님이, 난 네가 박사학위를 했으면 좋겠다, 내가 돈 다 대주마. 내 재산을 봐라, 난 2백억 달러나 된다. 그리고, 내가 그의 제자를 왔을 때, 난 언제나 1등이었습니다.
Somehow it didn’t interest me. Ok, it’s because I think it’s maybe because back in my mind, being exposed to my Chinese master’s master Xuan Hua’s system, I found that to go to another system, I have to compromise what we stood for, I stood four years. 4 years, I lived like that already.
어째선지 그게 내 흥미를 끌진 못했습니다. 오케이. 왜냐면 내 생각엔 아마 내 중국인 스승님, 선화상인의 체계를 접했기 때문에, 그게 맘 뒤켠에 남아있었습니다. 내가 다른 체계에 가면, 내가 4년간 견지해온 것들을, 내가 4년 동안 이미 그렇게 살아온 것들을 타협해야만 한다는 걸 알게 됐습니다.
So I had to join another system where you know they give you a lot more money, and better clothes you are so much more secure, so much less pressure. But what’s lacking is this principles here. These guiding principles that I felt that these principles are worthwhile as a criteria for left home person, for a cultivator.
그래서 난 또 다른 체계에 참여하면, 돈을 많이 주고, 더 좋은 옷을 주고, 더 안정적이고 덜 부담을 줍니다. 하지만, 없는 게 뭐냐면, 여기 이 종지입니다. 여기 이 종지들이 난 출가자로써, 수행자의 기준이란 가치가 있다고 느낍니다.
Very important principles for a decent human being. Alright? So all the years I began to appreciate more and more about these 3, the first 3 teachings that he gave us. Ok. He said freezing to death, we do not climb on condition.
건실한 사람으로 살기에 매우 중요한 원리들입니다. 알겠습니까? 그래서 그 모든 세월동안 난 선화 상인께서 우리에게 주신, 이 세 가지, 첫 세 가르침의 진가를 점점 더 알기 시작했습니다. 오케이. 그가, 얼어죽어도, 반연하지 말라고 하셨습니다.
Oh yeah, thank you very much. 동사불반연. So even when you are freezed to death, you don’t climb on conditions. Climb on conditions can be translated in laymen’s term like we do not scheme and so forth.
오케이. 고맙습니다. 동사불반연. 그래서, 얼어 죽을지라도, 반연하지 말아라. 반연한다는 건 세간적인 말로는 궁리하지 말아라 등등으로 번역될 수 있습니다.
Climb on conditions, also Chinese have even has clear clear definition. Ok, Chinese people, what does the 반연 means? Chinese, what does that means? (Climbing up) Yeah, 반연 is actually climbing, you climb on conditions. Yeah you climb on conditions. What does that mean? Climbing on conditions.
반연한다는 건, 중국어로는 매우 명확한 정의가 있습니다. 오케이. 중국인들, 반연이 무슨 뜻입니까? 중국 사람들, 무슨 뜻입니까. (타고 오른다고요) 네, 반연은 사실 오르는 것, 연에 오르는 겁니다. 네. 여러분이 연에 오르는 겁니다. 그게 무슨 뜻입니까? 연에 오르다.
(Taking advantage?) That’s right. You might as sees your opportunity, you take advantage of it, right? Why not? That’s what laypeople think. Vietnamese, now you are victorious might as well now you took over that ? You take a further step to get more out of it. Right there, the door step.
(이점을 누리다?) 맞습니다. 그걸 여러분이 기회로 보고, 그 이점을 누리는 겁니다. 맞습니까? 왜 안 돼? 그게 세간 사람들의 생각입니다. 베트남 사람들 ?를 점영했을 때에도 승리했잖습니까. 거기서 한 발 짝 더 나가는 겁니다. 바로 그겁니다. 그 문턱을 건너는 것.
It’s right in front of your mouth. Just mouth opens and chew and swallow. Yes? Ok. Is that clear? 반연 has the kind of context? Climbing on conditions has that kind of connotation. What does it mean? It means that it says here, freezing to death, mean you are freezing to death. Your life in danger, Ok.
바로 입 앞에 있습니다. 그냥 입을 열고 씹고 삼키면 됩니다. 알겠습니까? 오케이? 명확해혔습니까? 반연이 어떤 맥락입니까? 연에 오른다는 건 그런 함의를 갖고 있습니다. 그게 무슨 뜻입니까? 그건, 여기, 얼어 죽어도, 여러분이 죽을 만큼 꽁꽁 얼엇단 겁니다. 여러분 목숨이 위험합니다.
Your life is in danger. You are in danger to freeze to death. And yet we refuse to climb on conditions. We don’t take advantages of the situations. We don’t take advantages of others. To save our own skin. Does it make sense for you?
목숨이 위험에 처했습니다. 얼어죽을 위험에 처했습니다. 그래도 연에 타고 오르는 것을 거부합니다. 우린 그 상황의 이점을 누리지 않습니다. 우린 위험에서 나오려고 다른 이들을 이용하지 않습니다. 여러분 이해 됩니까?
Back then, I don’t know. I don’t really think about it. Let’s face it. Our lives are not in danger yet, But what’s important to me is 반연. Meaning, under normal circumstances do you normally climb on conditions? I ask myself. Ok. I went to Taiwan. To a temple, the head, the abbot for some reason, respect to me so much.
당시에 난 몰랐습니다. 난 거기 대해 생각해보지 않았습니다. 여러분 현실을 직시합시다. 우리 목숨은 아직 위험에 처하지 않았습니다. 하지만 내게 중요한 것은 반연입니다. 그건 정상적인 상황 하에서 여러분은 보통 연을 타고 오르지 않습니까? 스스로 물어보십시오, 오케이. 내가 대만 절에 갔을 때, 어떤 이유에선지 거기 주지스님이 날 매우 공경했습니다.
I bowed to him, he refused to take my bows. Typically you go to a monk, you go to a temple. You still have to bow to the abbot, Ok? It’s proper etiquette for us. ? Chinese system, why? Anyone knows? Yes. (inaudible) No. You don’t give blessings to the abbot. You take it from them. (respect) Yes, getting close.
내가 그에게 절을 했는데, 그가 내 절을 받길 거부했습니다. 보통 여러분이 비구에게, 절에 가면, 그 주지스님께 절해야만 합니다. 오케이? 그게 바른 에티켓입니다. 중국 시스템에서는. 왜 그렇습니까? 누구 안느 사람? 네. (청중 안 들림) 아닙니다. 여러분이, 주지스님에게 복을 주는 게 아니라, 그들로부터 여러분이 받는 겁니다. (공경의 뜻에서) 네, 가깝습니다.
When you bow to an abbot, even a left home person you are actually thanking the abbot. What for? It’s because of his blessings that we are able to come to a temple. Each abbot, without blessings, cannot have a temple. So he uses his temple, he uses his blessings to create this temple for us.
여러분이 주지스님에게 절을 하면, 출가자도, 여러분이 사실 그 주지스님에게 감사하는 겁니다. 뭘 위한 겁니까? 왜냐면, 그의 복으로 인해 우리가 절에 갈 수 있기 때문입니다. 각 주지스님은 복이 없으면 절을 가질 수 없습니다. 그래서 그가 우리를 위해 이 절을 만들어서 자기 절을, 자기 복을 쓴 겁니다.
Does it make sense? Because we go to a temple, the proper etiquette for a left home person, no matter who you are, even you are very senior person, very senior monk, ok. You bow to junior monk even. It’s true. But it’s not done.
이해 됩니까? 왜냐면 우리가 절에 가면, 출가자로서 바른 에티켓은, 여러분이 누구건, 아무리 연장자건, 아무리 원로 스님이건 오케이, 우리보다 후배일지라도 절합니다. 사실입니다. 하지만 이게 끝이 아닙니다.
Because you say I know that I come to temple here. It’s an honor because I recognize that you have to use your blessings to create this temple. Your own blessings. So that I have a chance to come here and bow to the Buddhas, make offerings to the Buddhas ok. And cultivate. Therefore I want to thank you for it. That’s the protocol.
왜냐면 여러분이, 여기 절에 와서 영광입니다. 이 절을 만드시려고 복을, 본인 복을 쓰셔야만 했단 걸 알기 때문입니다, 덕분에 제가 여기 와서 부처님께 절을 하고 공양을 하고, 수행을 할 수 있는 기회가 생겼습니다, 그러니 거기에 대해 감사드리고 싶슾니다, 라고 합니다. 그게 의례입니다.
But nowadays actually the truth is that when the senior monk come over here, I bow to them. They say, yeah. Right, right. And guess what? He’s losing blessings, I’m not losing blessings. Alright? Alright.
하지만 요즘은 사실은 원로 스님이 여기 오면, 내가 그들에게 절합니다. 그들은, 음 그래 맞아 맞지. 그럼 맞춰보십시오. 그가 복을 잃는 거지 내가 복을 잃는게 아닙니다. 알겠습니까? 그렇습니다.
So I went these temples and so forth. For some reasons, this abbot refused to, normally for junior monk to bow to the abbot, that’s acceptable. That’s good manners, good breeding. But this abbot here refused to take my bow. He said, no no no. Don’t bow to me.
그래서 내가 이런 절들에 갔는데 이 주지스님이 어떤 이유에선지 거절했습니다. 보통 후배 스님이 주지스님에게 절하면, 받아줄만합니다. 그건 좋은 매너고, 좋은 양육 방식입니다. gkwal나 이 주지스님은 내 절을 받길 거부했습니다. 그가, 아냐, 아니다. 내게 절하지 마렴. 이라고 했습니다.
Ok. He excused me from all the ceremonies. No ceremonies. All left home people that stayed his temple have to attend ceremonies. Especially on weekends If you are not, they throw you out. Especially on weekend. I was excused on all the ceremonies.
오케이. 그리고 그는 내가 모든 예불에 빠져도 되게 해줬습니다. 예불 안 해도 됐습니다. 그의 절에 머무는 모든 출가자들은 예물에 참석해야만 했습니다. 특히 주말에는 말입니다. 여러분이 빠지면, 그들이 던져버릴 겁니다, 특히 주말에. 난 그 모든 예불에 예외였습니다.
And he gave me the best room. One of the best rooms in a temple as well. For some reasons, I don’t quite understand. But the whole time I never asked for favors, asked for favor some this, some that. Because of this first line, 불반연. So you take advantage of the situation. Alright. Does it make sense?

So as a person, why shouldn’t you take advantage of the situation, of the conditions? Why not? Yes. (inaudible) Exactly. Very good. Where did you learn Buddhism from again? Say it. Yes she does.
한 사람으로, 왜 그 상황의, 연의 이점을 누려선 안 됩니까? 왜 안 됩니까? 네. (청중 안 들림) 정확합니다. 아주 좋습니다. 당신 어디서 불교를 배웠다고? 말하십시오. 네, 그랬답니다.
Because if you climb on conditions, ok. First of all, it’s from greed. You are feeding on your greed. Agree or disagree? It’s never enough. You keep on climb on conditions. Every time. You never stop. Your greed is bottomless. Yes? There’s no end to it.
왜냐면, 여러분이 연에 오르면, 오케이, 무엇보다도 그건 탐심으로 인한 겁니다. 여러분이 여러분의 탐에 먹이를 주는 겁니다. 동의합니까? 그건 절대 충분치 않습니다. 여러분이 계속해서 반연합니다. 매번. 절대 멈추지 않습니다. 여러분의 탐에는 바닥이 없습니다. 네? 거기 끝이 없습니다.
#2, what scared me most is not just greed. Ok? (inaudible) I don’t even, know about the concept of blessings. I just I don’t care. Very simplistic. Blessings? He. Who cares? I have no notion of blessings. So what’s real reason? (inaudible)
두 번째, 날 가장 두렵게 한 건, 그저 탐이 아닙니다. 오케이? (청중 안 들림) 난 복의 개념이라곤 몰랐습니다. 난 신경 안 씁니다. 아주 단순했습니다. 복? 허, 누가 신경이나 쓴다고? 난 복을 인지하지 못했습니다. 그럼 진짜 이유가 뭡니까? (청중 안 들림)
Because everywhere I went, they told each other, the Taiwanese told each other. All the monks they tell each other. They said hello he’s from CTTB, disciple of master Xuan Hua. Disciple of master Xuan Hua. So what scared me was nothing but the fact that I would make my master lose face. Alright?
왜냐면, 내가 어딜 가건, 그들이 서로 그 대만 스님들이 서로 말했습니다. 모든 스님들이 서로에게 말했습니다. 쟤 봐, 만불성성에서 왔대, 선화상인 제자래, 선화상인 제자라고. 날 가장 두렵게 한 건, 다른 무엇도 아닌, 내가 내 스승님의 면목을 잃게 할 수 있단 사실이었습니다. 알겠습니까?
So that’s why. That’s why we shouldn’t 반연. We shouldn’t climb on conditions. Because it makes your teacher, your boss, your father. You make them lose face. Your ancestors. Very lousy quality seeds. Agree or disagree? Ok?
그래서 우린 반연해선 안 됩니다. 우린 연을 타고 올라선 안 됩니다. 왜냐면 그게 여러분의 스승님의, 상사의, 아버지의 체면을 잃게 하기 때문입니다. 여러분 조상님을 말입니다. 아주 변변찮은 품질의 종자로군. 동의합니까? 오케이?
#2. 아사불화연. Starving to death, we do not beg. What’s begging here. (inaudible) She said begging for food. Agree? Oh, it’s here already. Agree or disagree? Any comments. Why don’t you beg for food. Aren’t we beggers for food? If you don’t beg for food, how can.
두 번째, 아사불화연. 굶어죽을지라도 구걸하지 않는다. 여기서 구걸이란 뭡니까? (청중 안 들림) 그녀가 음식을 구걸하는 거라고 합니다. 동의합니까? 아 벌써 이정도라니. 동의합니까? 코멘트? 여러분 왜 음식을 안 합니까? 우린 음식 구걸하는 사람들 아닙니까? 음식 구걸을 안 하면 그럼 어떡합니까.
You know why the Buddha taught his monks to go and beg for food? Yet my master said no, I’m not gonna beg for food. Isn’t that against the Buddha’s teaching? Hmm? Yes. (To practice giving?) But the Buddha said you are supposed to go and beg for food.
여러분, 왜 부처님께서 그의 출가자들에게 가서 음식을 구걸하라고 했는지 압니까? 그런데, 왜 내 스승님께서는, 아냐, 난 음식 구걸 하지 않겠어, 라고 하신 겁니다. 그건 부처님의 가르침에 반하는 것 아닙니까? 네. (보시를 수행하려고?) 하지만 부처님께서 너희는 가서 음식을 구걸해야만 한다고 하셨습니다.
My master said no, I’m not gonna go and beg for food. Yes. (Vietnamese) What’s your landlord’s name, Billie? Hong, right? See, you know what begging foods means. This is how we monks are supposed to beg for food. We go across the street on Billie’s house right there.
내 스승님께서는, 아냐, 난 가서 음식을 구걸하지 않겠어, 라고 하셨습니다. 네. (베트남 청중) 당신 집주인 이름이 뭐였습니까, 빌리? 홍이었습니까, 네? 여러분, 음식을 구걸하는 것의 뜻이 뭔지 압니까. 우리 출가자들은 음식을 구걸하는 방식은 이렇습니다. 우린 길을 건너 빌리네 집으로 갑니다.
Are you really there by ? and Clarks and so Billie? Just for future reference. So comes around 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock we stand up there house and don’t say a word. Ok? The Taiwanese, they hit the handbell. 띵, 띵, 띵 (laugh) This I saw in Taipei. Ok? They have these handbell here. They have these open bowl. You can see that they are begging. Their one hand holds the bowl, the other hand, 띵 띵 띵 띵. And they walk back and forth in a crowded street, downtown Taipei.

And they wear red sashes as well. Yellow robe here. Red sash. Holding a bowl. And 띵 띵. And looked at people in the eyes, 띵 띵 띵. You feel lucky today. Yes, Anna. What do you think? (inaudible)
붉은 가사도 입고 있습니다. 여기 노란 장삼에 빨간 가사, 발우를 등고 띵, 띵. 사람들 눈을 쳐다봅니다. 띵, 띵, 띵. 오늘 운이 좋다고 느낍니다. 네, 안나. 어떻게 생각합니까? (청중 안 들림)
Sometimes. at the Chan monasteries, yes. But for regular temples, they go and they beg for food. For example, Hinayana. (inaudible) Yeah. Good English. I don’t need the translation. Nice try. Nice try, ok. Alright. Here’s what the Buddha taught that the monks and nuns are supposed to go and beg for food.
어쩔 때, 선사에서는 그렇습니다. 하지만 일반 절에서는 나가서 음식을 구걸합니다. 예를 들어 소승에서는. (청중 안 들림) 네, 영어 잘 하시는군. 통역 필요 없습니다. 좋은 시도였습니다. 오케이. 네. 부처님께서는 비구 비구니는 가서 음식을 구걸해야한다, 라고 가르치셨습니다.
#1 is humility. We are beggers. How can beggers be arrogant. And if you don’t beg, ok then you go hungry. See that? So we must beg. You need to beg in order to live. Everyday. How can you possibly be arrogant towards laypeople. Because you have to beg for their help. Right?
1번, 겸손함입니다. 우린 거지입니다. 어떻게 거지가 오만할 수 있겠습니까? 만약 여러분이 구걸하지 않으면, 오케이 그럼 굶주리게 됩니다. 알겠습니까? 그러니 우린 구걸해야만 합니다. 살려면 구걸해야합니다. 매일매일. 어떻게 재가자들을 향해 오만할 수가 있겠습니까, 우린 그들의 도움을 구걸해야만 하는데 말입니다. 알겠습니까?
Because monks and nuns tend to think they are superior. We are called teachers of gods and humans. 천인사. And yet we are teachers of the gods and the humans because we are not arrogant. If you are arrogant, you shouldn’t be teaching them.You are not qualified to teach.
왜냐면 비구 비구니들은 그들이 우월하다고 생각하는 경향이 있습니다. 우린 천인과 사람들의 스승으로 불립니다. 천인사. 우리가 오만하지 않기 때문에 천인과 인간의 스승인 겁니다. 여러분이 오만하다면, 가르쳐서는 안 됩니다. 가르칠 자격이 없습니다.
So part of the training of left home person, so we need to go and beg for food. Because everyday we remind ourselves ok. We cannot afford to be arrogant because these people are feeding me, providing sustenance for me to be a monk and a nun. Alright? That’s #1, reduces arrogance.
출가자로서의 훈련의 일부는 그래서, 가서 음식을 구걸하는 겁니다. 왜냐면 매일 우리 스스로에게 상기하는 겁니다. 오케이. 우린 오만할 수 없습니다 왜냐면 이 사람들이 우리가 비구 비구니로 지낼 수 있게 먹여주고, 생계를 제공해주기 때문입니다. 알겠습니까? 그게 1번입니다. 오만함을 줄여주는 것.
Alright. And the other reason being that when receive offerings like this, ok, you are taking it in exchange of giving out your own blessings. Ok? So far so good? Meaning if they give this bowl of rice ok? How much is the bowl of rice worth? Today, how much is it worth? (1 dollar) 1 dollar? Shall we agree on 1 dollar? Right? 1 dollar. Give us 1 dollar. Ok. What are you back return?
네. 다른 이유는, 이렇게 공양을 받으면, 여러분 자기 복을 교환해서 그걸 받는 겁니다. 오케이? 지금까지 괜찮습니까? 만약 그들이 밥 한 공기를 주면, 오케이? 밥 한 공기 얼마입니까? 요즘 얼마 합니까? (1달러) 1달러? 우리 1달러로 합의하겠습니까? 네? 1덜러입니다. 우리에게 1달러를 주는 겁니다. 여러분은 얼마를 돌려주는 겁니까?
You are giving back blessings. Worth how much? Would you like to know? (Vietnamese) She said 100 times, I said why are you so greedy? Anywhere between 10 times to . So 10 dollars is coming from maybe Tony. Ok.
여러분이 복을 돌려줍니다. 그게 값이 얼만큼입니까? 여러분 알고 싶습니까? (베트남어 청중) 그녀가 100배라고 합니다. 내가, 왜 그렇게 탐욕스럽습니까, 당신? 10배부터 어느 곳 까지입니다. 그래서 10달러는 아마도 토니로부터 올 겁니다. 오케이.
Depends on how you give. If you don’t know how to do it. you just do it as per tradition you get back maybe 10. 10 times. Let’s say master Xuan Hua decide to give you a bowl of rice, Ok? How much you think that he’s gonna get from you? Nothign. Because he’s supposed to give, he’s not supposed to take. Ok?

만약 아라한, 태국 아라한이 와서 여러분에게 팟타이를 주면 얼마를 돌려 받겠습니까? 자네들, 곤경에 처한 겁니다. (오 안 돼요) 네, 오, 안 돼, 가 맞습니다. (저 아라한한테 차 엄청 얻어 마셨는데요) 당신, 멍청이. 이해했습니까?
The concept here is these monks and nuns act as the field of blessings for lay people. Because these people don’t necessarily have the chance to go to their temple, to your temple. So we bring the temple to their homes. To their markets. Isn’t that cool?

여러분, 전체 문장을 읽어야 하는 겁니다. 그 전체 문장의 뜻을 보십시오. 선화상인께선 석가모니 부처님의 가르침에 반하는 것이 아닙니다. 여러분이 한 두 구절을 뽑아내서, 기에 부처님의 가르침에 반한다, 하고 해선 안 됩니다. 아닙니다, 그 전체, 구절 전체 문장은 여러분이 죽도록 굶주릴지라도 구걸하지 말라, 라고 하는 겁니다. 뭘 위해서 말입니까? 호의를, 음식을, 어떤 것도 구걸하지 말라고 하는 겁니다.
He said my disciple, even if they are about to starve to death, they would not even beg for a single grain of rice. You don’t. So you are gonna beg? You want this piece of bread? What do you say? Hung says, (마스터 고개 흔듦) (Vietnamese) She said if you really follow the Buddha’s teaching and if you are in trouble, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas come and save you.
선화상인께선, 내 제자들아, 굶어 죽기 직전일지라도, 쌀 한 톨도 구걸하지 말라, 하지 말아라, 라고 하시는 겁니다. 그러니 구걸할 겁니까? 여러분 이 빵 한 조각을 원합니까? 뭐라고 하겠습니까 여러분? 홍이 (고개 흔듦) (베트남어 청중) 그녀가, 여러분이 정말로 부처님의 가르침을 따르면, 여러분이 곤경에 처하면 불보살님께서 오셔서 구해준다고 합니다.
I said even if they don’t come and save you, you still don’t beg. I know what she means. The worst scenario, no one comes. Maybe I should beg to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for help. Just like at home, you are hungry, mom can I have something? Dad can I have 5 dollars for gas? Even the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, you don’t ask for anything. You get it? That’s why I worship my master because he said even your own teacher, your own Buddha, I would not ask. That’s how you become Buddhas.

If you come and practice and say, hey I know the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas come and help me. That means that you still plan to depend on the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In that case, you will never become a Buddha. You see, you don’t need to learn about the Shurangama Sutra. You know people who can lecture extensively on the Shurangama Sutra and the flower adorment sutra.
여러분이 와서 수행하며, 이봐요, 전 불보살님이 와서 절 도와주실 걸 알아요, 라고 한다면, 그건 여러분이 여전히 불보살님께 기댈 계획이 있단 걸 의미합니다. 그런 경우하면 여러분이 절대 부처가 되지 않을 겁니다. 여러분, 능엄경에을 배울 필요 없습니다. 여러분, 능엄경, 화엄경 강의를 특히 매우 잘 할 수 있는 사람을 압니다.
You know what they are goona do when they are in trouble,they say Buddha, please help me so that I can continue to lecture on this Sutra, yes? If you justify, I’m so important, what I’m doing is so important. Yes, please help me. So that I can continue this important work.
그들은 곤경에 처하면, 부처님 제가 이 경전 강의를 이어갈 수 있게 부디 절 도와주세요, 라고 합니다. 맞습니까? 여러분은 전 너무 중요해요, 제가 하는 일이 너무 중요해요. 네, 부디 절 도와주세요, 라고 정당화하는 겁니다. 그래서 제가 이 중요한 일을 이어갈 수 있게 해주세요.
If you have that kind of mindset, you will never become a Buddha. You can research and understand all the best Sutras in the world. You still cannot become a Buddha. Yes. (inaudible) Absolutely. Because begging here means that my life is in danger. Concept is my life is in danger. Because of starvation, I will not beg so that my life can be saved.
여러분이 그런 마음가짐이라면 여러분은 절대 부처가 될 수 없을 겁니다. 여러분이 세상 최고의 모든 경정을 조사하고 이해할 수 있더라도 여전히 부차가 될 수 없습니다. 네. (청중 안 들림) 네. (물론입니다. 여기서 구걸한다는 뜻은, 내 목숨이 위험에 처했습니다. 그 개념은 내 목숨이 위험에 처했습니다, 굶주림 때문에. 내 목숨이 구해지도록, 구걸하지 않을 거란 겁니다.
When your life is in danger, you don’t even open your mouth and ask the Buddha, Buddhas help me out, because I’m doing important work for you. That’s what he’s teaching. Anyone explained to you like this before? That’s what it means.
여러분 목숨이 위험에 처했을 때, 입을 열어 불보살님, 절 도와주세요, 제가 당신을 위해 중요한 일을 하고 있어요, 라고 하지 않는 겁니다. 그게 선화상인께서 가르치시고 있는 겁니다. 누구도 이렇게 전에 여러분께 설명한 적 있습니까? 그게 이런 뜻입니다.

(현신스님: 구연은 구하다, 연을 구하다는 거예요) 연을 구하다, 연을 구하는 것의 뜻이 무엇입니까? 연을 구하는 것과 연을 타고 오르는 것의 차이가 뭡니까? 궁리하는 것과 구한느 것의 차이가 뭡니까? 연을 타고 오르는 것과 연을 구하는 것의 차이 말입니다.
I wish, you know, it’s so sad we can’t use the word conditions. Because conditions, we lose the meaning, we lose the teaching. the part of the teaching by not leading out of the word conditions. Conditions are very important concept. That’s why it takes us longer to explain these teachings.
난 바라건대, 여러분, 우리가 연이란 단어를 쓸 수 없단 게 참 슬픕니다. 왜냐면, 컨디션이라고 하면, 그 뜻을, 그 가르침을 잃는 겁니다. 연이란 단어를 내세우지 못해서 그 가르침의 일부를 잃는 겁니다. 연은 매우 중요한 개념입니다 그래서, 이 가르침ㅇ르 서명하는 데 우리가 시간이 더 오래 걸리는 겁니다.

수연불변 불변수연 포정아문삼대종지. 연에 따르되 바뀌지 말라. 바뀌지 않되, 연에 따른다. 이게 우리 일의 기반을 형성하는 3대 종지입니다. 수연불변 불변수연, 무슨 뜻입니까.
So you see, now you accord, we follow, we accord with conditions but do not change. And you do not change and yet accord to conditions. What does it mean 수연? (Ven.XX: Accord with conditions) Accord with conditions. Ok. What does it mean, accord with conditions.
그래서, 여러분, 이제 우린 연을 따라야 합니다, 연에 조화해야 합니다. 하지만 변하지 말아야 합니다. 그리고 변하지 않고 연에 따라야 합니다. 수연이 무슨 뜻입니까? (현신스님: 연을 따르는 거요) 연에 따른다, 오케이. 연을 따르는 게 무슨 뜻입니까?
What is 수, what is accord, accord with? What does it follow along conditions? Meaning what? Give an example someone who follows conditions versus someone who fights with conditions, who fights conditions. The opposite, you fight. Right? You oppose, instead of according with, yes? Right? Give an example. Easy to understand. (inaudible) What?
수, 따르다, 따른다는 게 무슨 뜻입니까? 연을 따라간다는 게 뭡니까? 무슨 뜻입니까? 연을 따르는 사람과, 연과 싸우는 사람의 예시를 주십시오. 그 반대로는 싸우지 않습니까? 따른ㄴ 대신, 반대합니다. 맞습니까? 네? 예시를 주십시오. 이해하게 쉽게. (청중 안 들림) 뭐라고?

Because if you can last 1 more day, a little bit longer, your faith becomes stronger. Your faith grows when you don’t quit. It’s not for the faint of heart. Make sense?
왜냐면 여러분이 하루 더 버틸 수 있다면, 조금만 더 , 여러분 신심이 더 강해집니다. 여러분이 관두지 않을 때, 여러분 신심이 자랍니다. 겁쟁이를 위한 게 아닙니다. 이해됩니까?

Ok? And that’s why my faith in the Dharma grew. So after staying 4 years in this environment, 수연불변 불변수연. 동사불반연, 아사불화연 궁사불구연. Living like that for 4 years. You are not gonna change. Ok? Make sense?
오케이? 그래서 그 법에 대한 내 신심이 자랐습니다. 그래서 이런 환경에서 4년간 지낸 후에, 수연불변 불변 수연. 동사 불반연 아사 불화연 궁사 불구연. 그렇게 4년을 살고. 여러분은 바꾸지 않을 겁니다. 오케이? 이해 됐습니까?
It’s amazing because you stay in that environment, it changes you invisibly. If I left 10 months ago, I would have you know, at least 20 temples by now. Oh, ya. Small ones. But 20. Not just 1. Ok?
