아프리카 서부, 나이지리아의 남서부의 항구도시

가장 하드보일드 하게 일했고

여러 가지 사건들이 많았던 곳

다녀온 곳이 싫다는 느낌은 없었는데

그만큼 일의 난이도도 높았고

한없이 더웠고, 크리스마스도 너무 더웠다

유일한 희망은 음악이었고,

내내 음악을 듣고 또 들었다

그렇게 법인과 호텔만 오가다

운전기사 알렉스와 대화를 하던 중

그가 베이시스트였다는 것을 알았다

나이지리아, 특히 라고스는 치안이 안 좋기로 유명하다

법인에서 외출하는 것을 꺼렸기 때문에

비밀리에 호텔을 나와서 알렉스네 작업실로 갔다

밤새 음악을 만들고 흑인 친구들의 감각을 같이 느꼈던 것 같다

그가 만든 음악을 들려주었는데 너무 좋았던 기억이 난다

그렇게 음악은 어느 척박한 공간에 가도

연결단자가 되어 준다

그리고 가장 순수하게 인간적인 관계를 만들어 준다

그 당시 만들었던 곡 'in the rain'

흑인 친구가 피아노 반주 위에 랩을 올려준 버전이 있다
