죽은 나무?
싱가포르에서 쓰다, 일기

경험은 다른 정서를 만들어 낸다.
싱가포르에서 일기예보를 볼 때는 한국과 싱가포르 두 나라의 예보를 모두 보게 된다. 현재 싱가포르는 26도로 연중 낮은 온도에 속하면서 시원하고 비가 잦다. 한국은 영하 4도, 며칠 전에는 영하 8도까지 떨어져 추웠다고 한다. 그리고 나는 상상을 한다. 이쯤이면 낙엽을 떨군 나무들이 빈 가지로 겨울바람을 맞겠구나.
싱가포르의 열대우림은 여전히 울창하다. 알게 모르게 묵은 잎을 버리는 동시에 새순을 분수처럼 피워 올린다. 몇 년 전 현지 친구 마이클 가족이 한국 여행을 했을 때 아들 가브리엘이 한 가지 질문을 했다. 열세 살에 처음 한 겨울 여행이었다. 산을 덮고 있는 회색빛 겨울나무가 신기했는지 죽은 나무가 저렇게 많은데 왜 제거하지 않느냐는 것이다. 가브리엘은 겨울나무를 처음 보았고 봄에 새순이 난다는 순리를 알지 못했던 것이다.
사철 여름인 곳에 지내면서도 나는 봄의 새순을 떠올리고 에어컨 속에서 가을 겨울의 한기를 연상한다.

When I look at the weather forecast in Singapore, I see the forecast for both Korea and Singapore. Currently, Singapore is at 26 degrees Celsius and has low temperatures throughout the year, making it cool and rainy. It is said that Korea fell to minus 4 degrees Celsius and minus 8 degrees Celsius a few days ago. At this point I can imagine the fallen trees will be hit by the winter breeze with empty branches.
Singapore’s rainforests are still dense. Unknowingly, it throws away the old leaves and at the same time it blooms like a fountain. A few years ago, when my local friend Michael’s family traveled to Korea, his son Gabriel asked me a question. It was his first winter trip at the age of thirteen. “The gray winter trees covering the mountains are amazing, there are so many dead trees, so why don’t you remove them?” Gabriel saw the winter tree for the first time and didn’t know the order of the spring.
Even though I live in summer all year round, I think of the new seasons of spring and think of the cold of autumn and winter in the air conditioner.
