U.S. Stock Indexes Rise as Israel and Iran’s Cease-Fire Got Off to a Shaky Start (WSJ. 20260624)
All three major US stock indexes ended the day up as Israel and Iran's cease-fire got off to a shaky start. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 507 points to close at 43089, the S&P 500 rose 67 points, and the Nasdaq advanced 282 points. US oil prices extended Monday's slide, falling around 5% to about $65 a barrel. The retreat came after President Trump said China could buy Iranian oil despite sanctions designed to impede such trade. Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell testified before Congress today and reaffirmed the Fed's wait-and-see stance on rate cuts. That's after two policymakers recently signaled they would consider cutting rates in July.
And fresh survey data showed consumer confidence fell in June, suggesting Americans are still nervous about tariffs even after the White House's steps to de-escalate the trade war. In individual companies trading today, shares of Uber jumped 7.5% after the ride-hailing service and self-driving car company Waymo launched their robotaxi service in Atlanta. Shares of Elon Musk's Tesla, which began operating its own automated taxi program over the weekend, fell 2.4%. Stock in semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices gained 6.8% after analysts upgraded its shares due to its progress in artificial intelligence chips. And cruise operator Carnival raised its annual outlook after logging better-than-expected quarterly results. Shares rose almost 7%.
