끈기: 열정과 인내의 힘

When I was 27 years old, I left a very demanding job in management consulting for a job that was even more demanding—teaching.
(27살 때, 나는 경영 컨설팅이라는 매우 힘든 직업을 떠나 더 힘든 직업인 교직을 선택했다.)

I went to teach seventh graders math in the New York City public schools.
(나는 뉴욕시 공립학교에서 7학년 학생들에게 수학을 가르쳤다.)

Like any teacher, I made quizzes and tests. I gave out homework assignments.
(다른 교사들처럼 나는 퀴즈와 시험을 만들고 숙제를 내주었다.)

When the work came back, I calculated grades.
(학생들이 제출한 과제를 보고 성적을 매겼다.)

What struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my worst students.
(나를 놀라게 한 것은, 최고의 학생과 최악의 학생을 가르는 차이가 IQ만이 아니었다는 점이다.)

Some of my strongest performers did not have stratospheric IQ scores.
(최고 성과를 내는 몇몇 학생들의 IQ는 그렇게 높지 않았다.)

Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well.
(반면, 가장 똑똑한 학생들이 기대만큼 성적이 좋지 않았다.)

That got me thinking.

The kinds of things you need to learn in seventh-grade math—sure, they're hard: ratios, decimals, the area of a parallelogram.
(7학년 수학에서 배워야 할 것들은 물론 어렵다. 비율, 소수, 평행사변형의 넓이 같은 것들 말이다.)

But these concepts are not impossible.
(하지만 이러한 개념들은 불가능한 것이 아니다.)

And I was firmly convinced that every one of my students could learn the material if they worked hard and long enough.
(나는 확신했다. 내 학생들 모두가 열심히, 그리고 충분히 오랫동안 노력하면 이 개념을 배울 수 있다고.)
