아! 신부(新婦), 먼지가 되어...

신부(新婦)

       서 정 주

신부는 초록 저고리 다홍치마로 겨우 귀밑머리만 풀리운 채 신랑하고 첫날밤을 아직 앉아 있었는데, 신랑이 그만 오줌이 급해져서 냉큼 일어나 달려가는 바람에 옷자락이 문 돌쩌귀에 걸렸습니다. 그것을 신랑은 생각이 또 급해서 제 신부가 음탕해서 그 새를 못 참아서 뒤에서 손으로 잡아당기는 거라고, 그렇게만 알고 뒤도 안 돌아보고 나가 버렸습니다. 문 돌쩌귀에 걸린 옷자락이 찢어진 채로 오줌 누곤 못 쓰겠다며 달아나 버렸습니다.

그러고 나서 사십 년인가 오십 년이 지나간 뒤에 뜻밖에 딴 볼일이 생겨 이 신부네 집 옆을 지나가다가 그래도 잠시 궁금해서 신부방 문을 열고 들여다보니 신부는 귀밑머리만 풀린 첫날밤 모양 그대로 초록 저고리 다홍치마로 아직도 고스란히 앉아 있었습니다. 안쓰러운 생각이 들어 그 어깨를 가서 어루만지니 그때서야 매운 재가 되어 폭삭 내려앉아 버렸습니다. 초록 재와 다홍 재로 내려앉아 버렸습니다.

A Bride

At the wedding night, a bride in green chogori and crimson chima(traditional Korean woman’s blouse and skirt) was sitting with his groom, barely letting down her hair braided behind the ears. Feeling nature’s call, the groom abruptly rose and rushed out. But the hem of his clothes got caught in a hinge. But the hasty groom misunderstood that his newly-wedded wife was so lewd that she pulled it without a moment’s patience. Not turning around, he went out in his torn clothes and, after pissing, he ran away blaming her for not being innocent.    

Some forty and fifty years after, the old groom, passing by her bride’s house on an unexpected business, had some curiosity about her, opened the door and looked into her room to find that she was sitting just as she had been at the first night. Feeling pity for her, he approached to her and touched her shoulder. Then, she broke down and turned into a handful of ashes. The green and crimson ashes. (Translated by Choi)

한 여인의 가슴 아픈 이야기. 꿈속에서나 있을 수 있는 사연이지만 여인의 가슴속 맺힌 한을 무어라 표현할 수 있을까요. 야속함과 그리움 그리고 짙은 서러움. 짧은 산문 속에 그려진 아픈 세월이 칼처럼 예리하게 폐부를 찌릅니다. 신랑은 왜 그리 어리석었을까요? 신부는 왜 말 한마디 못했던 것일까요? 그까짓 멍청한 사내를 왜 오랜 세월 기다리고 있었을까요? 신부의 그 질긴 기다림의 의미는 무엇일까요? 잿더미로 타버린 어린 신부의 세월이 너무도 안타까워 눈물이 납니다.
