동물들이 찾은 낙원, 비무장지대(DMZ)

동물은 인간의 활동이 없는 황량한 자연을 자기들의 안식처로 바꾸었다. 남북한 사이의 비무장지대(Demilitarized Zone, DMZ)는 생긴 지 수십 년 만에 6,100여 종 이상의 야생동물들의 보금자리가 되었다. 동물왕국의 창의성이 이룩한 쾌거다. 

한국전쟁으로 만들어진 성역의 땅 비무장지대에 서식하는 조류, 파충류, 포유류, 식물의 구글 스트리트-뷰 이미지(Google street-view images)가 휴전 70주년을 맞아 최초로 공유되었다.

산양, 수달, 검독수리, 사향노루 등 한국의 멸종 위기종의 38%가 이곳에서 발견된다. 야생동물 옹호단체 DMZ포럼의 이승호 회장은 이 지역이 "우연한 낙원"이 되었다고 CNN에 말했다. 수천 명의 생물이 동의할 것이다!

필자 주

1. 필자는 생명체의 지혜로운 생존전략과  강인한 생존의지를 믿는다. 따라서 자연은 버려지면 황폐해지기 보다는 더 생명체의 활기찬 세상이 된다. CNN의 DMZ기사도 이를 증명해준다.

 Leave it to the ever-ingenious animal kingdom to transform a barren landscape devoid of human activity into a wildlife haven. The more than 6,100 species within the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea have made their homes in the space between the two countries, which has become a sanctuary in the decades since the DMZ was created. Google street-view images of the birds, reptiles, mammals and plants that live in the DMZ were shared for the first time to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, which helped establish the DMZ. Among the DMZ's residents: Mountain goats, otters, golden eagles and musk deer — in all, 38% of Korea's endangered species are found there. Seung-ho Lee, president of the wildlife advocacy group DMZ Forum, told CNN that the region has become an "accidental paradise." Thousands of creatures would  agree! "
