치앙마이에서 만난 움직이는 눈, 그 세 번째 이야기입니다.

눈이 저에게 준 한 단어입니다. 아버지가 영국 사람이고 어머니가 태국 사람인 포이에게 저는 편한 언어로 적어 달라고 했어요. 그녀가 준 모국어입니다.

눈에서 받은 선물을 저는 제 언어로 표현해 볼게요.

눈의 이야기인데 싱잉볼 이야기가 되겠네요. 

이 눈은 제게 새로운 싱잉볼을 소개해 주었어요. 그녀 왈 그 볼들은 모두 '프랭크 주니어'라고 했어요.

사실 저는 '프랭크'를 가지고 싶었어요. 프랭크(Frank)는 싱잉볼이에요.

싱잉볼 트레이닝 과정 동안 프랭크는 모두에게 인기가 많았어요. 가슴을 웅웅-거리게 하는 진동이 유독 깊고 강한 녀석이라 모두가 탐을 내었어요. 다른 애들을 쳐 봐도 프랭크만한 강렬함을 주기에는 어딘가 부족해 보였어요. 가슴을 뻥 뚫어줄 것 같은 프랭크는 존재 자체로 웅장 했거든요.

그런데 주니어라니. 프랭크만 하겠어. 싶은 거예요.

주니어 세 명을 제 가슴 위에 올려놓고 하나씩 테스트를 해보았어요. 포이는 볼을 굉장히 부드럽게 쳤어요. 저는 뭔가 더 세게 쾅-쳐야 진동을 확 느낄 거라고 생각했는데 그 정도 세기에도 충분히 전달되었어요. 볼의 울림. 아이들은 저마다 다 달랐는데 어떤 애는 높고 맑은 소리가 머리에 먼저 전달되고 서서히 가슴을 울렸고 어떤 아이는 처음부터 낮은 진동이 가슴으로 잔잔하게 퍼져나가는 느낌이었어요. 특히 한 아이는 정확하게 가슴으로 정조준해서 진동이 훅 들어가는 느낌인 거예요. 가슴에 올렸을 때부터 가벼워서 별로 기대하지 않았는데요. 어쩌면 그 가벼움이 제가 진동을 있는 그대로 받을 수 있게 만들어 준 듯도 했어요.

이날 만난 '프랭크 주니어'에게 하고 싶은 말이에요.

프랭크 주니어는 무겁지 않고 재밌어. 그게 그녀의 울림이야. 이름처럼 빛나요.

+ 눈 인터뷰의 순서는 제가 눈을 만난 순서대로입니다. 이야기의 서사를 떠올려서 인터뷰이를 선정하지는 않지만 서로 대화하는 것처럼 이야기가 이어지는 느낌이 들 때도 있습니다. 오늘의 눈은 이전 눈의 따님입니다.  

++ 저의 눈 인터뷰는 이전에 쓴 대로 계속 진화 중입니다. 방식도 조금씩 변화하는데요. 그 과정대로 그냥 담으려고 합니다. 1편부터 보시다 보면 그 변화가 느껴지실 거예요. 글을 쓰는 시점과 인터뷰 시점의 갭이 조금씩 커지고 있어서 진화의 끝은 조금 더 기다려주셔야 합니다.

처음은 사진으로 상대의 눈을 담았고 몇 가지 질문을 했어요. 다음은 질문이 줄고 상대의 움직이는 눈을 쳐다보았어요. 렌즈를 통해서요. 그리고 다음은 렌즈를 통하지 않고 상대의 눈을 바라보기로 했어요. 그걸 담는 방법을 계속 연구를 하였고요. 지금은 인터뷰이가 저를 통하지 않고 직접 자신의 눈을 보고 그 답을 찾아보는 과정을 쓰려고 합니다. 나는 누구지에 대한 답이요.

The Moving Eye Met in Chiang Mai, It's the Third Story.

This eye gave me a word. It's her mother tongue.

"Balance."

I'll try to express the gift from the eye in my language.

It's a story of the eyes, but this time it seems like it's turning into a story of singing bowls. 

Poi introduced me to new Singing Bowls. She said all those bowls are called 'Frank Junior'. Actually, I wanted 'Frank'.

Frank is a singing bowl. During the Singing Bowl training, Frank was popular with everyone. Its vibrations, resonating through the chest, were particularly deep and powerful, so everyone coveted it. Even though other bowls were tried, they seemed lacking in the intense presence that only Frank provided. Frank seemed majestic just by its existence.

But 'Junior', though. I just wanted Frank.

Poi put three juniors on my chest and helped me to feel them one by one. She hit the bowl very gently. I thought I needed to hit it harder to feel the vibration, but it was enough to be conveyed even at that intensity, the resonance of the bowl. Each child was different, one child, for instance, had a high, clear sound resonate in my head before gradually reaching my chest, while another seemed to emit a gentle, low vibration that spread calmly through my chest from the outset. Particularly, one child gave me the sensation of the vibration precisely targeting my chest. I didn't expect much because it felt light when I put it on my chest. That lightness perhaps allowed me to receive the vibration as it is.

What I want to say to 'Frank Junior' I met that day.

Frank Junior is not heavy, more playful. That's her resonance.

+ The order of eye interviews follows the sequence in which I encountered the eyes. While I do not select interviewees based on the narrative of the story,  there are moments when it feels like we're continuing the conversation from the previous tale of the eyes.

++ My eye interviews are continually evolving. The approach is also gradually changing, and I intend to capture it as it progresses. As you read from Part 1 onwards, you will feel the evolution. Due to the increasing gap between the time of writing and the time of the interview, you'll have to wait a little longer to witness its culmination.

Initially, I captured the eyes of the subject through photographs and asked a few questions. Next, the questions diminished as I gazed into the subject's moving eyes, through the lens. Then, I decided to observe the subject's eyes without the lens. I am continuously researching methods to capture this. Next, I plan to write about the process where the interviewee looks directly into their own eyes and seeks answers without my mediation. It's about finding the answer to 'Who am I?'
