So let's talk about equality.
이제 ‘평등’에 대해 이야기해 봅시다.

In our country, there are groups of students who chronically underperform,
우리나라에는 만성적으로 성취도가 낮은 학생 집단들이 있습니다.

for example, children in inner cities, or children on Native American reservations.
예를 들어, 도심 지역의 아이들, 혹은 아메리카 원주민 보호구역에 사는 아이들입니다.

And they've done so poorly for so long that many people think it's inevitable.
이 아이들은 너무 오랫동안 성과가 낮았기 때문에, 많은 사람들이 그것을 ‘어쩔 수 없는 일’로 여깁니다.

But when educators create growth mindset classrooms steeped in yet, equality happens.
하지만 교육자들이 ‘아직(yet)’이라는 개념이 스며든 성장형 사고방식 교실을 만들면, 평등이 이루어집니다.

And here are just a few examples.
여기 몇 가지 사례가 있습니다.

In one year, a kindergarten class in Harlem, New York scored in the 95th percentile on the national achievement test.
뉴욕 할렘의 한 유치원 학급이 단 1년 만에 전국 학력 평가에서 상위 5%에 들었습니다.

Many of those kids could not hold a pencil when they arrived at school.
그 아이들 중 많은 수가 입학 당시에는 연필도 제대로 쥘 수 없었습니다.
