이번에 읽은 책: 기 드 모파상 <목걸이> + 오 헨리 <크리스마스 선물>

기 드 모파상의 <목걸이>에 나오는 글입니다.
자신의 삶에 만족하지 못하고 늘 불만만 터뜨리다 허영심으로 인해 인생을 허비하고 마는 여성의 이야기입니다.

오 헨리의 <크리스마스 선물>에 나오는 글입니다.
크리스마스를 앞두고 남편에게 줄 선물을 사기 위해 고민하는 여성의 이야기입니다. 너무나 가난해서 남편에게 좋은 선물을 사주지 못하는 자신의 처지를 안타까워하지요.

그런데, 왜 두 작품을 한꺼번에 읽었냐고요?
Partly because I believed the two books would present a good opportunity to compare the very opposite characteristics of human beings.
And partly because I felt it necessary to enlighten one of my family members who had been confused with one another.
Don’t you know? <The Necklace> is one of the most famous stories written by O. Henry.
As the title suggests, the man in the story buys a necklace for his wife after selling his precious watch. Meanwhile his wife buys him a watch chain after selling her hair…
Well, how was he going to grasp the ironic situation the author had carefully created for the story? A man who sold his watch receiving a watch chain? Yes, that’s sad. But how about his wife who sold her hair receiving a necklace? What’s wrong with a necklace for a short-haired woman?
With this explanation, I managed to convince him that he had mixed up O. Henry’s story with that of Maupassant. I suspected, however, the explanation won’t be enough. Therefore, I persuaded him to read the two stories, one by one. I read them again too to refresh my memory.
As you know, we all sometimes get confused with totally different stories. Especially when they happen to share certain features.
<The Necklace> and <The Gift of the Magi> have, indeed, a number of things in common:
Both stories feature young couples who are not very well off. And they make readers ponder about the meaning of real happiness. The authors of each book are famous for short stories too. This is, however, where their similarities end.
결국, 기 드 모파상의 <목걸이>와 오 헨리의 <크리스마스 선물> 이 두 작품을 헷갈려하는 사람 때문에 두 책을 한꺼번에 읽었습니다. 저도 가족도. 내용상 공통점이 있기에 헷갈릴 만도 하지요.
다음은 제가 <크리스마스 선물>의 내용을 분석하다가 발견한 흥미로운 사실입니다. 이 부분을 말했더니 남편이 발끈하더군요. 자신이 어린 시절 읽었던 추억의 작품에 대한 환상을 깬다나 뭐라나.
잘 알려진 고전도서에 대한 환상을 깨고 싶지 않은 분은 읽지 마시길!!!
I highly praise the love and devotion that Della and Jim feel for each other in <The Gift of the Magi>. I must, however, point out the unpleasant facts that made me want to argue with the author. Well, he has been long dead, so I won't.
Firstly, the money Della has saved for the Christmas gift.
$1.87 in total? Yes, it sounds very little to anyone who knows about the US dollar. But, the book was written in 1905, when that amount of money would be equivalent to about $62 in 2020s.
Although $62 may not be enough to buy a watch chain, it is still enough for other gifts you can choose for your loved one. Especially when you think your life is hard.
Secondly, Della's hair is a problem. Don't you think it's too long?
It reached below her knee and made itself almost a garment for her.
No matter how beautiful it is, growing hair that long doesn't sound normal and practical to me. Think of water and shampoo that could be wasted.
Thirdly, the gift Dell has chosen for Jim. A watch chain? When Jim doesn't even have proper garments to keep himself warm in cold weather?
He needed a new coat and he had nothing to cover his cold hands.
Why didn't she buy a coat and a pair of gloves for Jim instead of a watch chain?
작품 속 돈 가치도 지금으로 환산해 보고 주인공의 머리 길이와 선물 고르는 감각까지 따져봤습니다. 대문호의 작품을 엉뚱하게 파헤치느라 누구 말대로 어린 시절 환상을 깰 필요까지는 없겠지만, 그렇다고 모든 사람이 똑같은 방식으로 책을 읽고 분석할 필요는 없겠다 싶어 해 본 일입니다.
