내가 좋아하는 노래들
New Jersey North Bergen 근처에 위치한 truck stop 에 간혹 갑니다. 거기에는 트레일러 운전사들이 New Jersey Turnpike 에서 잠시 빠져나와 잠시 끼니를 해결하거나 쉬어가기도 하는 곳으로, 짧게는 5시간 그리고 길게는 며칠을 운전하는 trucker 들이 주로 애용하는 곳이지요. 지금도 그렇지만 trucker 가 되는 것이 개인적인 꿈이기도 합니다. 언젠가는 이 꿈을 이루리라 하는 생각에 이 곳에 가서 장거리 운전사들과 이런저런 이야기를 하기도 합니다.
별이 보이는 밤, 조명조차 한산한 어느 외진 highway 한 가닥 - 며칠간의 삶은 해결할 수 있는 공간과 수납공간을 가진 큰 트럭을 타고 달리며 지역 라디오 채널에서 흘러나오는 80년대와 90년대 pop 을 듣는 저 자신을 잠자리에 누워 시간이 가는 줄 모르고 상상하기도 합니다.
Karla Bonoff 의 노래 "Home" 이 이런 상상에 아주 적격이지요. 길고 긴 lonesome highway 를 달리는 여정이 끝난 후 다시 집으로 향하는 trucker 의 느낌이 배어있는 노래입니다. 물론 이 가수가 이 노래에 trucker 의 마음을 담지는 않았겠지만, 그래도 왠지 "traveling at night, the headlights were bright..." 라고 시작하는 이 노래를 들을 때마다 마음만은 그 어느 lonesome highway 를 운전하는 trucker 저 자신을 상상하게 됩니다.
