Animal footprints on the snow
falling all night -
Footprints of frolicking puppies?
Perhaps struggling sign of wolves
trying to find food.
Why does snow fall
and mountain animals starved?
Why the winter comes again
and makes animals shudder?
Why God creates beasts
and makes them roll their
lives all over the snow?
I put my foot in the footprint
Fits! Maybe my footprint?
Even without snow,
earth is packed with
a great many exhausted footprints –
just like dinosaur’s millions of years ago.

마음이 양털같이 여린 시인은 일열종대로 집안을 들락거리는 개미를 보면서도 연민을 느끼며
학살을 주저한다. 그러니, 눈 위에 널려 있는 짐승 발자국을 보고, 눈 위에서 뛰노는 강아지들의 잠시 상상하다가 자신의 발자국을 찾는 것은 자연스러운 과정이다. 인간이 다른 동물들과 달리 문명을 이루어 살고 있지만, 한 겨울 눈 위에서 막을 것을 찾아 헤매는 늑대와 근본적인 삶은 다르지 않음을 시인은 믿고 있다. 시인이 살아온 삶을 돌아보면, 눈이 덮이지 않는 맨땅에도 자신의 어지러운 발자국으로 도배되어 있음을 보고 ‘나도 치열하게 살았구나’하며 위로를 받는다.
