#이야기를 시작하기 전에
저는 여행을 좋아하고 하고싶은 일이 무엇인지 찾아다니는 혜룡입니다. 저는 지금 제주도에서 1년 넘게 체류중이고, 이곳에서 많은 사람들을 만나고 경험하며 글을 쓰고 있습니다. 지금은 J-Space (Co-working space) manager로 일하고 있습니다.
저는 '노마드워커(Nomad-Worker)'를 꿈꾸고 있습니다. 제가 생각하기에 '노마드워커'는 장소에 구애받지 않고 여행을 하면서 어떠한 일 또는 행위를 하는 사람 이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 제가 바라는 앞으로의 라이프스타일은 원하는 시간에 원하는 만큼의 일을 하고, 그로 인해 발생되는 수익으로 오로지 나를 위한 삶을 사는 것 입니다. 또, 다양한 나라를 돌아다니며 많은 사람들을 만나고 문화를 경험하고 생활해 보는 삶을 사는 것 입니다. 하지만 아직 저는 용기가 없고, 내가 어떤 일을 하면서 여행을 다닐 수 있을지 모르겠습니다.
그래서 저는 '노마드워커'에 대한 글을 쓰기로 했습니다. '리모트워킹(Remote-Working)'을 하는 혹은 여행과 일에 대한 것을 조절하며 생활하는 사람들에 대한 이야기를 말이죠. 그들을 만나서 나누었던 이야기들을 써보려 합니다.

2016년 8월. 딱 1년 전 제주의 여름. J-Space에 방문 했던 Peter는 J-Space에 몇 안 되는 외국인 이용객 이었다. 영어가 서툴렀던 나는 그에게 묻고 싶은 것들이 참 많았지만, 비즈니스 영어로 들어가는 순간, 그가 하는 말들을 알아들을 수 없어 대화를 많이 하진 못했다. 그러나 그는 인내심을 갖고 나에게 끊임없이 말을 걸었고, 이해 할 수 있게 도와주었다. 우리는 한 달 동안 참 많은 교류를 했었다. 점심을 함께 먹으러 가기도 했었고, 주말마다 ‘따로또같이’ 모임에 참여하거나, J-Space에서 만난 다른 외국인 멤버와 퇴근 후 많은 시간을 가졌다. 센터에는 영어를 잘 하시는 분들이 계셨는데, 나는 항상 그분들과 함께 Peter를 만나 주말이면 제주 곳곳을 돌아다니며 그와 많은 이야기를 나눌 수 있었다. 지금도 여전히 나의 영어는 훌륭하지 못 하다. 그러나 나에게는 주입식 교육으로 얻은 독해 능력이 있었고, 시대의 발달로 번역기가 도와주니 SNS를 통해 그와 끊임없이 소통을 이어나갈 수 있었다. 산을 좋아하는 그는 여전히 등산을 다녔고, 여러 나라를 떠돌고 있었다. 시차 덕분에 메시지를 주고받는 시간차가 있었지만, 우리가 교류를 1년 넘게 유지하고 있다는 사실이 신기했다. 나는 그에게 몇 가지 질문을 적어 보냈고, 그는 친절하게 답변을 주었다. 다음은 그와 나눈 내용 중 일부이다.

Please introduce yourself briefly, and tell us what you are doing (work and life style).
Hi my name is Peter. Digital Nomad from the Netherlands. I am a Financial Consultant, I advice start ups to improve structures and work flows in order to let them reach goals more effective and save costs.
My lifestyle is one of traveling, mostly Asia. Although I am back in the Netherlands for a while now. Love outdoor, Nature and hiking.
What did you do before?
I used to be a freelance Financial Controller for several Multinationals in the chemical industry.
Why do you live as a remote worker? (Travelling / nomad worker, why it is good)
Simply because I don´t feel happy when I´m tied to one single place.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the current method?
Advantage is the freedom, the combination of travel and work and meeting new interesting people all the time. Disadvantage is that it´s more difficult to find customers that can accept your life and workstyle. So income is less certain.
Please talk about the future (what are you planning to do in the future, etc.)
For the near future, there no new plans. Maybe later I will settle down some where in Asia and keep working from that location.
Thank you Peter! I have one more question. It 's about Jeju Island that you visited last year.
What was the occasion to come to Jeju Island? Please tell us what impressed you in Jeju, and did things in Jeju affect you now?
in J-SpaceI came to Jeju Island especially to work in the co working space. Of course I wanted to see the Island and the mountain as well.
I was Impressed by the hospitality of the people at J Space, but also on the rest of the Island. I enjoyed the co working events that were organised outside J-space in the weekends.
'따로또같이' 모임 참석The only effect is that I have some friends in Jeju now. Nothing related to my work. Mostly because of the language barrier.
